Job summary

Profusion is partnering with a financial services organization to hire a Senior Engineer - Mainframe on a permanent basis in Australia. The hybrid role is office-based in Surfers Paradise.

You will work on mainframe systems (z/OS) using COBOL/PLI, JCL, CICS, IMS and batch processing, and apply AI-assisted tooling to coding, debugging, and performance analysis in a production environment. The role emphasizes production support, incident investigation, and willingness to explore modern technology

Qualifications

• Strong proficiency in mainframe technologies — COBOL and/or PLI, with working knowledge of JCL, CICS, IMS, and batch processing.
• Experience developing and supporting applications on z/OS in a production environment.
• Demonstrated comfort using AI tools for software engineering (e.g., AI coding assistants, code generation, AI-assisted debugging).
• Ability to investigate and resolve production issues on the mainframe — abend analysis, debugging, and performance diagnosis.

Profusion is partnering with a financial services organization who are looking for a 'Senior Engineer - Mainframe' to join one of their departments on a permanent engagement. This will be a hybrid working model, with the office based in Surfers Paradise.

The client is looking for someone with the following:

Must Have

• Strong proficiency in mainframe technologies — COBOL and/or PLI, with working knowledge of JCL, CICS, IMS, and batch processing
• Experience developing and supporting applications on z/OS in a production environment
• Demonstrated comfort using AI tools for software engineering (e.g., AI coding assistants, code generation, AI-assisted debugging) — this is a core skill, not a nice-to-have
• Ability to investigate and resolve production issues on the mainframe — abend analysis, debugging, and performance diagnosis
• A mindset of curiosity and adaptability — willingness to work outside your comfort zone and extend into modern technology platforms

Highly Valued

• Experience with Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, and microservices
• Experience with event-driven architecture and messaging platforms (Kafka, MQ)
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and modern DevOps practices
• Experience in banking, financial services, or other regulated environments
