Job summary

Gilmour Space Technologies seeks a Lead System Modeller Engineer in Queensland to drive modelling of aerodynamics, thermal and mechanical systems for rocket programs. You will lead a talented engineering team, set technical direction, and ensure robust system modelling across the product lifecycle.

The role requires a strong background in engineering modelling, CAD/FEA/CFD, and Python coding, with eligibility for CPENG/RPEQ and NV1 clearance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s (B.S.) degree in Physics, Mechanical, Electrical, or Aerospace / Aeronautical Engineering or a relevant qualification.
• 5+ years experience in engineering modelling.
• Ability to model a complex system, using fundamental mechanical/aerothermal principles, with mission constraints.
• Experience with mechanical CAD Software.
• Experience with FEA and CFD.
• Experience programming in Python.
• CPENG and RPEQ eligibility or CPENG/RPEQ eligibility.
• Ability to obtain NV1 Security Clearance.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage a team of engineers developing complex aerodynamics, thermal, and mechanical models.
• Lead the team technically with support from the Chief Engineer.
• Ownership of the System Modeller processes, tools and technologies.
• Act as the Technical Authority on System Modelling, if requested.
• Conduct and support System Modelling from low to high fidelity in all product life cycle phases.
• Ensure completion of work packages and engage with suppliers and stakeholders.
• Provide expert direction, mentorship and support to the team.
• Prioritise work allocation and align with organisational programs.
• Lead coordination with other departments in the business.
• Demonstrate role-model traits for junior engineers.
• Work with HR to grow and manage the team.
• Other duties as requested by Management.

• Lead and manage a team of engineers developing complex aerodynamics, thermal, and mechanical models
• Lead the team technically with support from the Chief Engineer
• Ownership of the System Modeller processes, tools and technologies
• Act as the Technical Authority, if requested, on matters relating to System Modelling
• Conduct and support System Modelling from low to high fidelity in all phases of our products life cycle
• Ensure the completion of work packages from the Launch Vehicle and Launch Site Product Heads as well as engaging with external suppliers, subcontractors and stakeholders, where required
• Provide expert direction, mentorship and support to the team
• Prioritise work allocation for the team while assessing the needs and requirements of the various organisational programs
• Lead coordination with the departments in the business
• Demonstrate desirable role model traits for junior engineers to look up to
• Work with the Human Resources team to grow and manage the team as required
• Other duties as requested by Management

Minimum Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

• Bachelor’s (B.S.) degree in Physics, Mechanical, Electrical, or Aerospace / Aeronautical Engineering or a relevant qualification
• 5+ years experience in engineering modelling
• Ability to model a complex system, using fundamental mechanical/aerothermal principles, and taking into account mission specific constraints and requirements. This can range from basic hand calculations to creating/using purpose-built tools, depending on the modelling fidelity required. Must be able to demonstrate sound engineering judgment in the choice of tools, priorities and processes as appropriate to the situation at hand.
• Experience with mechanical CAD Software
• Experience with FEA and CFD
• Experience programming in Python
• Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technologies and methodologies with minimal guidance
• Proven ability to operate in dynamic, fast paced environments
• Ability to work efficiently in a team environment with a desire and willingness to assist other team members in the general day to day running of the organisation
• Maintains or is eligible for CPENG and RPEQ
• Ability to obtain NV1 Security Clearance

Desired Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

• Proficient in ANSYS Mechanical and/or NASTRAN FEA
• Proficient in Fluent and/or Star CCM CFD and/or ANSYS Thermal Desktop
• Proficient in data analysis techniques, including manipulation of raw data from testing for obtaining useful inputs to analysis or for verifying analysis results
• Demonstrated engineering experience within the space, aerospace or automotive industries
• Experience working with Systems Engineering practises
• Experience programming in C++
• Experience automating software CI/CD pipelines
• Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills
• Exceptional time management, communication, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to rapidly change goals while working in a high-paced, challenging work environment
• Experience with both waterfall and agile project management frameworks
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
• Leadership, motivational and/or negotiating skill. Anticipates and responds to the needs of others
• Proven Ability to prioritize and manage work demands and deliver outcomes
• Self-motivated, results oriented with a high level of attention to detail
