Beca Pty. Ltd. in Melbourne or Sydney is seeking a Lead Secondary & Protection Engineer to provide technical leadership on major energy infrastructure projects across Australia and New Zealand.

You will guide multidisciplinary teams, mentor engineers and shape the future of Beca's Secondary & Protection capability. The role offers opportunities to lead protection schemes, perform fault studies, engage with clients and pursue growth within an employee-owned consultancy that values collaboration

Qualifications

• Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering with Chartered/Registered status or working towards professional registration.
• Extensive experience delivering secondary and protection designs for transmission and distribution projects, including protection relays and substation automation.
• Proven ability to provide technical leadership, mentor engineers and support team development.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and implementation of secondary and protection systems for transmission and distribution substations up to 500kV.
• Provide technical leadership across complex projects, ensuring high-quality and fit-for-purpose outcomes.
• Lead and mentor engineers, supporting technical development, knowledge sharing and capability growth.
• Develop and review protection schemes, secondary systems, fault studies and power system analyses.
• Partner with clients to provide technical advice, project scoping and practical delivery solutions.
• Support project pursuits, client relationships and the continued growth of Beca's Power business.
• Be an integral part of a team delivering best-in-class designs and contributing to career development pathways.

Lead Secondary & Protection Engineer

Beca's Power business operates as a truly integrated Asia-Pacific team, with experts across Australia, NewZealand, Thailand and Indonesia delivering some of the region's most significant energy infrastructure projects. As Australia accelerates its energy transition, we're partnering with utilities, renewable energy developers, major contractors and infrastructure providers to deliver projects across the full lifecycle, from concept and detailed design through to procurement and construction support. The Opportunity

We're looking for a Lead Secondary & Protection Engineer to join our growing Power team in Melbourne or Sydney. In this role, you'll provide technical leadership across complex transmission and distribution projects while helping shape the future of Beca's Secondary & Protection capability. You'll work closely with clients, lead multidisciplinary project teams, and guide engineers through the delivery of major energy infrastructure projects across Australia and NewZealand. This is an opportunity to combine technical leadership, client engagement and people development while contributing to some of the region's most significant renewable energy and power projects.

What You’ll Do

• Lead the design and implementation of secondary and protection systems for transmission and distribution substations up to 500kV.
• Provide technical leadership across complex projects, ensuring high-quality and fit-for-purpose outcomes.
• Lead and mentor engineers, supporting technical development, knowledge sharing and capability growth.
• Develop and review protection schemes, secondary systems, fault studies and power system analyses.
• Partner with clients to provide technical advice, project scoping and practical delivery solutions.
• Support project pursuits, client relationships and the continued growth of Beca's Power business.
• You will be part of Beca’s team of leading design experts working collaboratively to deliver best-in-class designs.

About You

You are a recognised Secondary & Protection specialist with extensive experience delivering transmission and distribution projects. You enjoy solving complex technical challenges, developing people and building trusted client relationships.

• Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering, with Chartered, Registered Professional Engineer status or working towards professional registration.
• Extensive experience delivering secondary and protection designs for transmission and distribution projects, including protection relays, substation automation systems and commissioning.
• Proven ability to provide technical leadership, mentor engineers and support team development.
• Strong stakeholder engagement, communication and problem-solving skills, with a practical and client-focused approach.
• Engineering consultancy experience is advantageous but not essential.
