Job summary

UGL Pty Limited is seeking a Lead / Principal SESA Engineer for a major greenfield rail project in South East Queensland. Based in Brisbane, you will establish and lead the systems engineering or safety assurance framework, coordinating with clients, regulators and delivery partners to ensure readiness from design through to commissioning.

You will mentor team members, drive requirements management, and apply ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288 and rail safety standards across a multi-disciplinary environment.

Qualifications

• A recognised engineering qualification relevant to the position.
• At least 10 years’ experience coordinating systems engineering, safety assurance or compliance on complex projects.
• Experience with major projects valued >$100M and using formal requirements tools.

Responsibilities

• Establish and manage systems engineering and/or safety assurance approaches across project scopes.
• Lead requirements definition, allocation and management per project standards.
• Drive implementation of systems and safety plans (requirements, configuration, RAM, system safety).
• Review submissions and assurance evidence from contractors/delivery partners.
• Coordinate risk assessment activities and develop safety assurance arguments for timelines.
• Engage with clients, regulators and stakeholders to demonstrate compliance and readiness.
• Provide guidance and mentoring to develop capability across the team.

Lead / Principal SESA Engineer | Major QLD Rail Project UGL is home to one of Australia’s largest in-house engineering teams, delivering complex transport and infrastructure projects nationwide. As part of the CIMIC Group, we bring long term stability, technical depth and genuine career pathways. These permanent full time positions will be based out of Brisbane’s CBD, and your first assignment will be to support a major greenfield rail project in South East Queensland. This next stage of work involves delivering new dual-track rail, tunnels, stations and stabling infrastructure, a large-scale expansion that will help shape the region’s long-term transport network.

About the role

As a Lead / Principal SESA Engineer, you will provide specialist systems and/or safety engineering leadership, guidance and direction for a major transport infrastructure project. Opportunities are available with a focus on either systems engineering or safety assurance. You will help establish and manage the relevant engineering and assurance frameworks, ensuring project plans, processes and assurance activities are effectively implemented. Working closely with engineering, design, testing, quality assurance, clients, regulators and delivery partners, you will support the project from stakeholder engagement and requirements definition through design, construction, testing, commissioning and system readiness. You will also coach and mentor other team members, helping build a capable and collaborative systems and safety engineering culture.

Key responsibilities

• Establish, influence and manage the systems engineering and/or safety assurance approach across defined project scopes.
• Lead requirements definition, allocation and management in accordance with project requirements and applicable standards.
• Drive the implementation of key systems and safety engineering plans, including requirements management, configuration management, reliability, availability and maintainability, and system safety.
• Review system assurance submissions, project documentation and assurance evidence provided by contractors and delivery partners.
• Coordinate risk assessment activities to identify, assess and mitigate potential railway operational hazards, and lead the development of progressive safety assurance arguments to support project timelines.
• Engage with clients, regulatory bodies and internal and external stakeholders to demonstrate compliance and system readiness.
• Provide technical guidance, coaching and mentoring to develop systems and safety engineering capability across the project team.

About you

• A recognised engineering qualification relevant to the position.
• At least 10 years’ experience managing or coordinating systems engineering, safety assurance or compliance processes on complex engineering projects.
• Experience contributing to major projects valued at more than $100 million.
• Demonstrated capability using requirements management tools such as DOORS Next Generation, DOORS Classic or Relatics.
• Strong knowledge of systems engineering lifecycle processes and relevant standards, including ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288.
• Experience with applicable functional safety and railway standards, including IEC 61508 and EN 50126, EN 50128 and EN 50129.
• Strong stakeholder engagement, communication, negotiation and influencing skills, combined with the ability to lead, coach and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
