Job summary

Westpac Group is seeking a Lead AI Engineer to join our DDAI team in a hybrid role across Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane. You will lead delivery squads focused on building and deploying AI applications and ML models to enhance our services and products.

You will collaborate with data scientists, software engineers and product managers to scale ML in production. You will architect CI/CD pipelines, leverage Azure ML and other cloud services, and guide senior engineers in a large enterprise setting.

Qualifications

• Proven leadership experience guiding delivery teams.
• Expert in Python with hands-on ML/AI model development.
• Strong experience with ML libraries: TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn.
• Experience with modern AI tooling: LlamaIndex, LangChain, AutoGen, DSPy.
• CI/CD expertise with Jenkins, GitHub, Bamboo and IaC tooling like Terraform/Chef.
• Big data tech experience: Hadoop, Spark, for feature engineering on Azure.
• Experience with graph databases and full-stack development (Node.js, React).
• Strong scripting skills: Bash, PowerShell.
• Azure/AWS solution design certifications preferred.
• Experience in A/B testing and experimental AI engineering.

What’s the role?

An exciting opportunity is available for a passionate, engaging and expert Lead AI Engineer to complement our Data, Digital, and Artificial Intelligence (DDAI) team.

The role works within delivery squads focusing on building and operationalising AI applications and ML models that will further enhance our service and product offerings.

Additionally, the role is responsible for engineering design, development, and deployment of machine learning (ML) models and Gen-AI agentic applications that solve complex problems and enhance our products and services. This role will work closely with data scientists, software engineers, and product managers to integrate machine learning solutions into production systems.

Your Checklist for Success

• Highly established people leadership experience whilst also being able to balance a hands-on senior AI Engineering workload.
• Expert programming skills in Python and strong familiarity with ML libraries such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or scikit-learn.
• Advanced experience building solutions leveraging frameworks such as LlamaIndex, LangChain, AutoGen, DSPy, etc.
• Deep experience building CI/CD pipelines and automation in Jenkins, GitHub and Bamboo, plus IaaC & configuration management tools such Terraform and Chef.
• Advanced experience with big data technologies like Hadoop, Spark, or similar for data processing and feature engineering, and implementing solutions on Azure ML, Synapse and Azure AI Services.
• Highly experienced in dealing with diverse stakeholders at all levels within a complex enterprise setting.
• Strong familiarity with Graph databases and their usage pattern, with hands-on experience in backend & frontend development using Nodejs and React.
• Advanced familiarity with scripting languages such as bash, PowerShell.
• Possess certification on Azure & AWS for solution design.
• Deep experience with A/B testing and experimental AI engineering design and architectural concepts.
• Well-rounded relationship management and business acumen with a default ability to cater language and style to suit any audience.
