About us

We are a boutique, NewLaw Australian immigration law firm focused on delivering client-centric immigration solutions. We work across all areas of Australian immigration and represent clients from asylum seekers to multinational organisations.

The firm is staffed by passionate immigration professionals (including an Accredited Specialist in Immigration Law) with extensive experience in Australian immigration and a drive to “beat yesterday”. We love innovation and thrive on adapting to change. Over the last 9 years we’ve focused on constantly improving and evolving our systems so our clients have access to the best-in-market immigration service.

We’re a small team (11 lawyers and 7 support staff), but we’ve been growing steadily off the back of a commitment to immigration excellence. We expect to keep growing by recruiting talent who share our values.

The opportunity

We’re looking for a final-year law student who wants real, hands-on experience in migration law. You’ll be a fantastic communicator, a collaborative team player and keen to learn.

You’ll support our lawyers across all areas of Australian immigration, from skilled and employer-sponsored visas to family visas and asylum applications. It’s a chance to build practical skills alongside experienced practitioners while you finish your degree, with hours that work around your studies.

The work you can expect
  • Working under the supervision of our lawyers, you will:

  • Research relevant legislation and help draft advice on specific areas of Australian immigration law

  • Help draft and prepare immigration matters (including applications, supporting submissions and other correspondence), and review and collate client information and documents

  • Draft blog posts on important (and interesting) issues in Australian immigration law

  • Make sure files are kept up to date in our internal file management system

  • Draft emails and cost agreements using our best-practice templates

  • Communicate with clients by phone, video conference, in person and email, including interviewing clients and gathering information (advice to clients is given by our lawyers)

What we’re looking for
  • You’ll be in the final year of a law degree (LLB or JD) in 2027

  • You’re based in Melbourne, available to work around 2 days per week, and have Australian work rights

  • A genuine interest in immigration law

  • Articulate, engaging written and verbal communication (we value plain English and prompt, effective communication)

  • The ability to develop relationships with clients from diverse backgrounds

  • A strong sense of ethics

  • Excellent organisational skills, and experience or ability with professional services tech stacks

We also value
  • An eagerness and motivation to learn and improve

  • An appreciation of diversity and tolerance for differences of opinion

  • A willingness to pick up, explore or propose new software tools and technologies to operate effectively

  • Previous experience in client-facing roles and/or high-volume transactional environments

  • A true team player with a commitment to working together, not against each other

  • An embodiment of our core values here: https://www.hannantew.com.au/core-values

What we offer
  • Real work experience in migration law, working directly with experienced lawyers

  • A non-traditional legal workplace, with no time recording, outdated administration or formal dress code

  • Our central Melbourne office, with various amenities

  • Flexible working arrangements (including provision of work-from-home equipment), with hours that fit around your study timetable and exams

  • A transparent firm culture and open communication with experts in their field (including access to an Accredited Specialist in Immigration Law)

  • A great work culture in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

  • $45.04 per hour (including 25% casual loading), plus super

  • A pathway to a graduate role for the right candidate
