Job summary

Forever Wild Initiative is seeking a capable operator to lead sustainable cattle production across Challa Station and allied properties in Western Australia. You will manage cattle and land activities, supervise staff, and ensure prudent conservation practices while maintaining equipment and records.

Ideal candidates bring remote-work experience, strong leadership, and a proven ability to operate heavy machinery safely. Australian citizenship or permanent residency is required.

Qualifications

• Experience in remote landscapes and safety
• Ability to lead small teams to deadlines and budgets
• Minimum three years of rural industry experience, including cattle handling
• Strong organisational and communication skills
• Knowledge of sustainable rangeland management or conservation
• Current manual driver's licence; HR licence or ability to obtain within 6 months
• Competent heavy machinery operator with maintenance know-how
• Australian citizen or permanent resident

Job description

Based within the extraordinary Western Deserts landscape at Challa Station, this role will help lead the production of high-quality, ecologically sound beef across a herd of 3,000 head, support the conservation of multiple rare and threatened species, and use and maintain large earth-moving equipment for landscape rehabilitation. This full-time, ongoing role offers a strong opportunity for a capable person looking to engage in genuinely sustainable beef cattle production.

Key responsibilities

• Overseeing cattle and land management activities, and leading staff to execute operational plans across the aggregated Challa, Meeline, Narndee and Boodanoo Stations
• Managing best practice in animal welfare and quality assurance
• Maintaining accurate records, including cattle numbers and movements, vaccinations, timesheets, and bore records
• Overseeing maintenance of fences, yards, watering points, and general infrastructure
• Operating heavy machinery, including for on-station contracts, and keeping it maintained to spec with up-to-date service records
• Supporting the science team with field monitoring, applied conservation work, landscape rehabilitation, and surveys
• Reporting and data entry using tools such as AgriWeb and Microsoft
• Leading with a focus on safety, performance, and integrity
• Representing the Forever Wild Initiative professionally

About you

• Experience working and staying safe in remote landscapes
• Able to work confidently under remote guidance, with integrity and timeliness
• Minimum three years' rural industry experience, including cattle handling
• Strong organisational skills across a busy, logistically complex environment
• Competent and experienced on motorbikes
• Moderate to high physical fitness for station work
• Able to lead and supervise a small team to a budget and timeline
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Knowledge of sustainable rangeland management or applied conservation
• Current manual driver's licence
• HR licence (or able to obtain one within 6 months)
• Competent heavy machinery operator, including maintenance, with relevant tickets or the ability to obtain them
• Are an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
• Desirable: HC/MC Licence, machinery tickets, degree or diploma in agriculture (regenerative focus preferred), conservation biology, or another land management field
