Job summary

SGS Australia in Paget, QLD is seeking hands-on Laboratory Casual Coal Technicians to support coal sampling, preparation and analysis on weekends with optional weekday shifts.

You will perform testing to recognised standards, operate CCLAS and computer systems, maintain a safe workspace, and contribute to accurate, timely reporting while joining a trusted global organisation committed to safety and quality.

Qualifications

  • You are flexible and available to work shiftwork when required.
  • Strong weekend availability, particularly Saturdays and Sundays.
  • Coal sampling, preparation or testing experience is preferred but not essential.
  • Experience in a mineral laboratory, industrial, production or hands-on environment is valued.
  • Good computer skills, including Excel; CCLAS experience is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, test and analyse coal and related samples accurately and on time.
  • Follow correct procedures for sampling, recording, preparation, storage and reporting.
  • Use basic CCLAS and computer systems to book in samples and record analysis.
  • Assist with preventative maintenance of preparation equipment.
  • Communicate clearly across shifts to support smooth workflow and handover.
  • Work safely, maintain a clean work area and follow SGS safety and quality procedures.
  • Support routine shipping and exploration project sampling, preparation and analysis.

Job Description

SGS is seeking hands-on and reliable Laboratory Casual Coal Technicians to join our Energy Minerals team in Paget, QLD. These casual roles will primarily support weekend work on Saturdays and Sundays with the opportunity for additional weekday shifts when required.

In this role, you will support the preparation, testing and analysis of coal and related samples, ensuring work is completed safely, accurately and in line with recognised standards. The position is ideal for someone seeking casual work with regular weekend availability, while also being open to intermittent weekday shifts.

About the roster: These casual positions will be predominantly used for Saturday and Sunday work, with weekday shifts offered intermittently when operational needs arise.

  • You have strong weekend availability, particularly Saturdays and Sundays.
  • Previous coal sampling, preparation or testing experience is preferred, but not essential.
  • Experience in a mineral laboratory, industrial, production or hands-on environment will be highly regarded.
  • Good computer skills, including Excel; CCLAS experience is advantageous.
  • You are reliable, safety-focused and comfortable working to tight deadlines.
  • You enjoy working in a team and can communicate effectively between shifts.
