Job summary

Barry Nilsson is seeking a part‑time Knowledge Lawyer (3–4 days/week) for 12‑month parental leave cover, with potential extension or permanency. You will support Insurance & Health, and Family Law, Wills & Estates with legal research, knowledge management, current awareness and capability development.

You will drive use of legal research platforms and AI-enabled tools, and contribute to the firm’s knowledge, innovation and business services goals.

Qualifications

• Admission as a legal practitioner in Australia or equivalent.
• Experience in Insurance & Health practice within a law firm or related area.
• Demonstrated interest in knowledge management, legal research, innovation, or legal technology.
• Experience with AI tools used for drafting, review, research and KM is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Provide timely, high‑quality legal research support to Insurance & Health practice and firmwide as needed.
• Manage Insurance Current Awareness, case alert reviews, summaries, categorisation and distribution.
• Maintain the register of client presentations and material cataloguing.
• Liaise with legal content publishers on subscriptions, content suitability and access issues.
• Maintain starter/leaver records for access and cost allocation.
• Monitor legislative, regulatory and case law developments.
• Deliver training and support on legal research platforms and knowledge systems; support KM projects.

You will join a tight-knit and highly collegiate Knowledge team of three, providing legal research and knowledge management support to the firm nationally. The team has experienced an exciting period of growth and offers a fast-paced and collaborative working environment.

About the Role

We're seeking a Knowledge Lawyer to join our team on a part-time basis, working 3 to 4 days per week. This is a 12-month fixed-term parental leave cover position, with the possibility of extension or permanency for the right candidate.

The role supports the firm's national Insurance & Health and Family Law, Wills & Estates practices by providing legal research, knowledge management, current awareness, and capability development services. You will also contribute to the effective use of legal research platforms and AI-enabled tools, as well as the firm's broader knowledge, innovation and business services objectives.

Responsibilities

• Providing timely, high-quality legal research support to the Insurance & Health practice and, as required, across the firm;
• Managing Insurance Current Awareness, including case alert reviews, graduate lawyer summaries, case categorisation and distribution, relevant Insights, and a monthly Insurance & Health publication;
• Maintaining the register of client presentations and ensuring relevant materials are appropriately catalogued and stored;
• Liaising with legal content publishers about subscription management including content suitability, product enhancement and development, access issues and changes, technical issues, support and training;
• Maintaining starter and leaver records to ensure appropriate access and cost allocation;
• Monitoring relevant legislative, regulatory and case law developments;
• Delivering training and support on legal research platforms and knowledge systems; and Supporting firm-wide knowledge initiatives and projects.

About You

We're seeking someone with:

admission as a legal practitioner (Australia or equivalent);

experience working in an Insurance & Health practice within a law firm or closely related area;

demonstrated experience or interest in knowledge management, legal research, innovation, or legal technology; and

experience with AI tools used for drafting, review, research, and knowledge management in professional services environments (desirable).
