NBN is Nine’s regional news arm, with an audience stretching across Northern New South Wales and into Queensland. It has bureaus with reporters and camera operators in the Central Coast, Tamworth, Lismore, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie and Taree, broadcasting out of a brand new state of the art studio and newsroom in Newcastle. NBN has been based out of Newcastle for 60 years, and is a talent pool for the broader Nine Network.

We are seeking a versatile Journalist to join our news team in Newcastle. This exciting opportunity offers a diverse brief, consisting of Reporting, Producing, and Sport Reading.

You will be an integral part of a news team covering a vast geographic area. Expect to report on a wide range of essential stories, from in-depth community issues and local council matters to handling extreme weather events, breaking news, and dedicated sport coverage ensuring there’s never a dull day on the road. You will be responsible for crafting compelling stories for the News bulletin, the NBN website, and all social media pages, collaborating closely with experienced regional camera operators across New South Wales.

Day to day you will :
  • Identify and react to breaking news, monitor local news and community social groups, and pitch well‑informed story ideas.
  • Produce multiple packages, VOs, and VOSOTS daily, collaborating with producers to script and edit stories across various media (including TV, radio, and social platforms).
  • Conduct engaging interviews (both in‑person and live) and actively build a strong network of local contacts and regional stakeholders.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of local news, sport, key coordinate daily with the Newcastle Team and work effectively in a team environment to ensure seamless newsgathering.
  • Demonstrate the ability to meet tight deadlines and maintain journalistic integrity while working under significant pressure (because time is a flat circle when a deadline is approaching).
Qualifications
What you’ll bring :
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism or equivalent
  • Experience in television journalism or news
  • Confident writing style, on‑air presence and ability to package for TV news
  • Strong relationship and network building skills
  • Seamless and crisp writing and communication skills,
  • Ability to engage peers, supervisors and interviewees in active, open and productive dialogue; absorbs information and acts accordingly
  • Proactive in discussing solutions and raising ideas; builds strong relationships, both internally and externally
  • Producing experience
  • An abundance of ideas, energy and the ability to work well as part of a team
