Job description

Achieving positive environmental outcomes for regional communities starts with strong local knowledge and experience. CQG Consulting (CQG) has recently become part of Beca, one of Asia Pacific's largest independent advisory, design and engineering consultancies. Together CQG and Beca are strengthening our environmental science, ecology, GIS, stakeholder engagement, planning and approvals capability across regional Queensland.
Both CQG and Beca have built their businesses on trusted relationships, outcome-focused advice and a strong understanding of their clients and the communities in which they work. Joining Beca creates new opportunities to grow our environmental services across Australia, particularly within the water, energy and defence sectors.

The Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity to join CQG's established and growing ecology and environmental team. We are seeking intermediate level ecologists to join our Rockhampton, Townsville and Brisbane offices. You will be working within a collaborative and supportive team committed to delivering high quality ecological assessments and practical outcomes.
You will contribute to a diverse variety of ecological assessments and projects around regional Queensland. Depending on your experience you may also manage projects, including components of larger multidisciplinary projects, and contribute specialist ecological input to climate and nature resilience assessments and reporting. This role will support your development both as a technical ecologist and as an environmental consultant within a multidisciplinary organisation.

Other Key Role Components Include
  • Deliver ecological services for our clients, with support from CQG's broader ecology and environmental team.
  • Plan, lead and undertake ecological field investigations, including flora, fauna and habitat surveys and, where appropriately qualified and authorised, fauna capture, handling and relocation.
  • Prepare clear and technically robust ecological assessments and reports to support development applications, environmental approvals and project planning.
  • Contribute to increasingly complex projects as your technical and consulting experience develops.
  • Contribute to the preparation of proposals, scopes and fee estimates
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients, project teams, regulators and other stakeholders.
About You

You will bring practical ecology experience and a genuine interest in helping clients address real world environmental challenges. You will enjoy working collaboratively with people from a range of professional backgrounds, and with clients to understand their needs. You will provide sound ecological advice and prepare clear, defensible and technical assessments that support positive environmental outcomes.
We are looking for someone with a combination of the following qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Practical field experience in ecology surveys, including vegetation, habitat and species surveys within an Australian context.
  • Experience in terrestrial, aquatic and/or marine fauna ecology.
  • Experience in fauna capture, handling and relocation would be highly regarded.
  • An understanding of natural resource management, biodiversity conservation and ecological impact assessment in Australia.
  • Demonstrated ability to analysis and interpret data.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing technical reports.
  • A degree in ecology, environmental science, zoology, botany, freshwater science or related discipline.
  • A sound understanding of Queensland and Commonwealth environmental legislation and approval frameworks.
  • The ability to work safely and effectively in the field, including in remote locations and challenging environmental conditions.
  • A current Australian drivers licence.

Ambitious to progress your career and relish an opportunity to work in an environment that encourages motivated, passionate, and enthusiastic consultants who want to make a difference. We'd love to support you to become a leader within your technical discipline. This position will provide you with wide exposure and create opportunities for career and professional development across the CQG and Beca businesses.
