The Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service (VALS) is seeking a dedicated Bail and Remand Support Program Report Writer to prepare culturally informed Aboriginal Bail Reports for Indigenous clients appearing in court. You will conduct interviews, perform socio-historical research, and compile concise, balanced, evidence-based reports within tight court timeframes.

Qualifications

• Strong writing and research skills with cultural awareness.
• Ability to interview and gather sensitive information.
• Understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture.
• Experience managing competing priorities with clients who have complex needs.
• Knowledge of privacy requirements and confidentiality.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and reporting tools.

Responsibilities

• Conduct culturally safe interviews with clients in custodial and community settings.
• Gather information about clients’ circumstances, identity, connections and supports.
• Undertake socio-historical, cultural and collateral research to inform reports.
• Prepare high-quality Aboriginal Bail Reports within short court timeframes.
• Gather and analyse information from clients, families, legal representatives and service providers.
• Collaborate to identify supports, referral pathways and bail planning.
• Liaise with courts, legal representatives, correctional facilities and Aboriginal organisations.
• Maintain accurate case notes and confidential information.
• Participate in supervision and ongoing professional development.
• Contribute to ongoing development and improvement of the program.
