Job summary

Whitsunday Regional Council in the Whitsundays region is seeking an Illegal Dumping Project Officer to lead initiatives that prevent, investigate and reduce illegal dumping across the region.

Reporting to the Manager Natural Resources and Regulation, you will coordinate enforcement actions, community education, and partnerships with agencies and schools, producing reports and materials to drive lasting environmental improvements.

Qualifications

• Experience in compliance, regulation, customer service, local government, community services or a related field.

Responsibilities

• Investigate illegal dumping incidents, including evidence collection and reporting.
• Identify offenders and implement appropriate compliance actions.
• Monitor hotspots and conduct routine inspections.
• Collaborate with State Government agencies, neighbouring councils and community groups.
• Develop and deliver community education and awareness campaigns.
• Facilitate presentations, workshops and engagement activities with schools and businesses.
• Produce monthly and project reports per partnership program requirements.
• Develop educational materials and operational documentation.
• Support Environmental Health Officers and other staff in waste reduction and prevention.
• Identify opportunities for service improvements and implement efficient practices.

Whitsunday Regional Council is seeking a passionate and proactive Illegal Dumping Project Officer to lead initiatives that prevent, investigate and reduce illegal dumping across the region.

As part of the Local Government Illegal Dumping Partnership Program, this exciting role provides the opportunity to work collaboratively with local government, state government agencies, industry groups, schools and the wider community to improve environmental outcomes and drive lasting behavioural change.

About the Role

Reporting to the Manager Natural Resources and Regulation, you will coordinate and implement initiatives aimed at reducing illegal dumping and improving community awareness of responsible waste disposal practices.

Key responsibilities include:

• Investigating illegal dumping incidents, including evidence collection, site inspections, data analysis and reporting.
• Identifying offenders and implementing appropriate compliance and enforcement actions.
• Monitoring known illegal dumping hotspots and conducting routine inspections throughout the region.
• Collaborating with State Government agencies, neighbouring councils, community groups and industry stakeholders to deliver successful project outcomes.
• Developing and delivering community education and awareness campaigns.
• Facilitating presentations, workshops and engagement activities with schools, businesses and community groups.
• Producing monthly and project reports in accordance with partnership program requirements.
• Developing fact sheets, procedures, educational materials and operational documentation.
• Supporting Environmental Health Officers and other compliance staff by building organisational capability around waste reduction, recycling and illegal dumping prevention.
• Identifying opportunities for service improvements and implementing efficient work practices.
