Job description

Stop the Press! Be the trusted safety partner for a national media business in Adelaide.

14th October, 2026

Health, Safety & Security Advisor

Adelaide | National Media Business | Full time (part time considered)

From the press floor to the front line, keep the people who tell Australia's stories safe.

Some safety roles give you one site and one set of risks. This one gives you a newsroom, a corporate office, a production operation team running across day and night shifts and journalists heading into bushfire and cyclone zones to get the story.

If you want variety, ownership and the backing of a national team, read on.

About our Client:

Our client is one of Australia's leading national media organisations that reach millions of Australians.

A fast-moving, values-driven business that takes the wellbeing of its people seriously, and it's backed by a strong national Health, Safety & Security (HSS) function that genuinely believes no one has to get hurt at work.

About the Opportunity:

This is a standalone safety role in Adelaide, so you'll have real ownership and be the go-to HSS partner for the site. But you won't be on your own. Reporting to the HSS Manager (Production), you'll be part of a collaborative national HSS team, sharing knowledge, tools and strategy with safety professionals around the country. It's a rare chance to learn how safety is done at a national scale while making a visible difference locally.

No two weeks will look the same. One day you're reviewing plant and machinery risk on the production floor; the next you're building a risk assessment for a reporter covering a natural disaster, or helping a leader work through a psychosocial issue in their team.

The business is self-insured in SA, so you'll also gain hands-on experience in self-insurance, claims and return to work.

What you’ll be doing:
  • Trusted partner: Work alongside leaders and staff across editorial, corporate, production and operations to build a culture where safety is owned, not imposed.
  • Practical advice: Give specialist, workable advice on WHS risks and safety systems of work within the business.
  • Risk in the field: Conduct risk assessments for journalists and crews working remotely or in high-risk environments, including natural disaster areas.
  • Incidents and investigations: Respond to incidents, injuries and threats, lead investigations and liaise with regulators where needed.
  • Audits and inspections: Coordinate and conduct audits and inspections, and coach leaders to own their hazard reporting, local HSS plans and emergency procedures.
  • Self-insurance and RTW: Help maintain the SA self-insurance model, review claims, work with the injury management provider and coach leaders in return-to-work practice.
  • Project lead: Coordinate the HSS team's project plans and objectives, track progress and report on outcomes.
  • Systems and data: Lead use of the HSS management system (MyOSH) - data quality, user guides, training and continuous improvement.
  • Vendors and security: Manage key safety vendors and subscriptions and, where delegated, site security services and emergency planning.
What you’ll bring:
  • A minimum Cert IV in Work Health & Safety (or tertiary qualifications in occupational therapy), with demonstrated hands-on workplace safety experience.
  • Proven experience managing safety risk in production, operations, manufacturing or other industrial environments, including the office areas that support them.
  • A reputation as a trusted partner. People come away from working with you feeling heard and helped, because you find practical solutions that fit the business’s risk profile rather than just saying no.
  • You're as comfortable with a machine operator as with an editor on deadline or a senior leader, and you adjust your style to suit.
  • Experience conducting inspections, audits and investigations, and managing contractors and third-party providers.
  • Confidence with HSS software (MyOSH, SolvInjury or similar) and Google Suite, plus solid project coordination skills.
  • Exposure to self-insurance, workers compensation or claims management will be highly regarded, as will further qualifications in risk, return to work, training or media.
  • Flexibility to work across Adelaide sites, be available for some evening and night work in line with production shifts, and travel interstate (including the NT) when needed.
Why you’ll love it:
  • Attractive paid parental leave program, plus birthday leave, volunteer leave, career break options and compassionate leave.
  • Flexibility: full time or part time considered for the right person, with hybrid work options.
  • Grow your career: learn from a national HSS team and access tailored development, including leadership programs.
  • Variety: few safety roles cover newsroom, corporate, production and field risk in one.
  • Health and wellbeing: an onsite gym, plus advice and support for healthy minds and bodies.
  • Perks: access to the group’s publications and products, exclusive staff discounts and financial wellbeing support.
  • Inclusive workplace: employee resource groups, parents’ rooms, multi-faith quiet rooms and opportunities to give back to the community.
