Job summary

St Michael’s Grammar School in Saint Kilda seeks a passionate Head of Dance and Choreography to lead the development and growth of dance across the K-12 program, as part of the Performing Arts Leadership Team.

The role is full-time, fixed term for three years commencing Term 1, 2027, with opportunities to shape curricula, co-curricular activities and performances, and to collaborate with staff, artists and students.

Qualifications

• Specialist qualifications and experience in dance with demonstrated expertise in education, choreography and performance.
• Current registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching.
• Demonstrated experience leading and developing a school dance program, curricular and co-curricular.
• Ability to mentor staff and build a cohesive, collaborative team.
• Broad, adaptable dance practice across contemporary dance, choreography and theatre.
• Strategic thinking to translate vision into sustainable action.
• Ability to lead choreography across Performing Arts productions and collaborate with directors and tech teams.
• Strong planning, organisational and communication skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with students, staff and families.
• Willingness to work evenings and weekends for rehearsals and events.
• Commitment to student wellbeing, inclusion and movement-based creativity.
• Knowledge of child safety expectations and policies, First Aid and Anaphylaxis certified.

The role

We are seeking a passionate, innovative and experienced leaderor the position of Head of Dance and Choreography to lead thedevelopment and growth of dance and movement at St Michael’s as akey member of the Performing Arts Leadership Team. This excitingopportunity is a full-time, three-year tenure commencing in Term 1,2027. Play a pivotal role in shaping a strong and vibrant K-12dance and movement culture, leading the School’s curricular andco-curricular dance journey while providing artistic leadershipacross choreography, performance and major Performing Artsproductions. The role will foster opportunities for students of alllevels of experience to develop physical awareness, confidence,creativity and artistic expression, while building pathways thatconnect dance learning with performance, future study and thebroader creative industries.

Working collaboratively with dance staff, Performing Artscolleagues, resident and external artists, you will providestrategic and artistic leadership that balances excellence andentry, strengthens internal capability and responds to contemporarydance practice, student interests and emerging opportunities.

You will demonstrate

Specialistqualifications and experience in dance, with demonstrated expertisein dance education, choreography and performance.

• Current registration with the Victorian Institute ofTeaching.
• A strong body of high-quality dance and/or choreographicwork across school and/or professional arts settings.
• Demonstrated experience leading and developing a successfuldance program, including curricular and co-curricularopportunities.
• Demonstrated success in leading, mentoring and developingothers and building a cohesive, collaborative and accountableteam.
• A broad and adaptable dance practice, with experienceacross contemporary dance, choreography, musical theatre andperformance, alongside an understanding of classicalDance.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and implement progressivelearning and performance opportunities that support bothartistic excellence and broad student participation.
• A creative, strategic and big-picture thinker who cantranslate a vision for dance and movement into meaningful,relevant and sustainable action.
• Demonstrated ability to lead choreography and movementacross Performing Arts productions and to collaborateeffectively with directors, musicians, performers, designersand technical teams.
• Strong planning, organisational and communication skills,with the ability to manage complex programs, projects,productions and events.
• Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to buildpositive relationships with students, staff, families andexternal practitioners.
• A willingness and availability to work evenings andweekends when required for rehearsals, performances,competitions and Performing Arts events.
• A willingness to contribute to all aspects of the School’sPerforming Arts program and to work collaboratively as a memberof a dynamic and creative team.
• Demonstrated commitment to student wellbeing, inclusion,participation and the development of confidence, creativity andconnectedness through Dance and Movement.
• Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to theSchool’s child safety expectations, principles andpolicies.
• Current First Aid and Anaphylaxis certification isessential.
