Job summary

SAHMRI is seeking an experienced Head of Bioresources to lead the strategic direction and day-to-day operation of its SPF small animal research facility on North Terrace, Adelaide. You will provide expert laboratory animal science leadership, ensure welfare, ethics compliance and high-quality service delivery to researchers and partners.

Qualifications

• tertiary qualification in veterinary science, medical science, laboratory animal science or related field
• Postgraduate qualifications or extensive relevant experience preferred
• Experience managing research facility resources (people, animals, budgets, equipment)
• Hands-on experience with laboratory animals in a research environment
• Understanding of animal welfare, ethics and regulatory requirements
• Knowledge of ISO, GLP and AAALAC standards and continuous improvement

Responsibilities

• Lead strategic direction and day-to-day operation of SAHMRI’s Bioresources facility
• Maintain SPF status through health monitoring, biosecurity, biocontainment and quarantine
• Provide expert advice on animal models and experimental design
• Support research projects involving wild-type and genetically modified animals
• Develop and improve SOPs and care protocols
• Introduce new technologies and process improvements
• Lead and develop reports, training programs and governance activities
• Oversee facility administration including budgets, inventory and equipment
• Collaborate with internal and external partners to optimise research infrastructure
