Job summary

Pullman Cairns International is seeking a Gardener / Handyperson to join its Engineering team in Cairns. The role combines horticultural duties with general maintenance to keep the hotel grounds and facilities in pristine condition.

You will work within a supportive Engineering team on a full-time basis, delivering high presentation standards across outdoor spaces and guest areas while contributing to preventative maintenance and collaboration with contractors.

Qualifications

• Experience in gardening, horticulture, landscaping or grounds maintenance.
• Strong knowledge of tropical plants and garden care.
• Experience in general handyman tasks or property maintenance.
• Hands-on, practical approach with attention to detail.
• Pride in work and high presentation standards.
• Ability to work independently and in a team.
• Reliable, proactive and initiative-led.
• Good communication and professional attitude.
• Willingness to rotate rosters including weekends and public holidays.

Responsibilities

• Maintain gardens, lawns and landscaped areas across hotel grounds.
• Care for plants: pruning, fertilising and general garden maintenance.
• Complete mowing, edging, weeding and seasonal tasks.
• Monitor plant health and report irrigation or maintenance issues.
• Maintain pathways, planters and outdoor furniture.
• Assist with general handyman and maintenance tasks.
• Support preventative maintenance across the property.
• Coordinate with internal teams and external contractors.
• Ensure outdoor and public spaces are safe, clean and well presented.

Job Description

As part of the Engineering team, you will play an important role in maintaining the hotel’s gardens, grounds and facilities to a high standard. This diverse position combines horticultural duties with general handyman and maintenance tasks, ensuring our outdoor areas and guest spaces remain safe, functional and beautifully presented.

You will work alongside an experienced and supportive Engineering team who take pride in maintaining one of Cairns’ leading hospitality properties. With planned work, supplied tools and strong team support, you will have the opportunity to make a visible impact across the hotel.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Maintaining gardens, lawns and landscaped areas throughout the hotel grounds.
• Applying horticultural knowledge to plant care, pruning, fertilising and general garden maintenance.
• Completing mowing, edging, weeding and seasonal garden tasks.
• Monitoring plant health and reporting irrigation or maintenance issues.
• Maintaining pathways, planters, outdoor furniture and external guest areas.
• Assisting with general handyman and maintenance tasks as part of the Engineering team.
• Supporting preventative maintenance activities across the property.
• Working with internal teams and external contractors when required.
• Ensuring outdoor and public areas are safe, clean and presented to a high standard.

Qualifications

What we’re looking for:

• Experience in gardening, horticulture, landscaping or grounds maintenance.
• Strong knowledge of plants and garden care, ideally within a tropical environment.
• Experience with general handyman tasks or property maintenance is highly regarded.
• A practical, hands‑on approach with strong attention to detail.
• Pride in your work and a commitment to maintaining high presentation standards.
• The ability to work independently while also contributing positively to a team.
• Reliability, initiative and a proactive approach to problem solving.
• Good communication skills and a professional attitude.
• Flexibility to work a rotating roster, including weekends and public holidays.
