Job summary

Australian Unity in Melbourne, VIC is seeking a Group External Reporting Manager to own statutory reporting for the group and its controlled entities. You will lead the preparation of annual and interim financial statements and support policy updates, with a focus on accuracy, compliance and efficiency.

Ideal candidates are CA/CPA qualified with 4–6 years in statutory reporting or Big 4 audit, strong Excel and familiarity with SUN/TM1/OneSource/NomosOne.

Qualifications

  • CA/CPA qualified and membership in good standing.
  • 4–6 years' experience in statutory reporting or external audit (Big 4 preferred).
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge and statutory reporting skills.
  • Advanced Excel and multiple financial software tools proficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare annual and interim financial statements for the AUL Group Consolidation and controlled entities.
  • Draft and present Board papers to Audit Committee and senior executives.
  • Design, operate and document procedures and key controls over the preparation process.
  • Support adoption of new Group accounting policies and new standards.

About the Opportunity

At Australian Unity, we're looking for an exceptional finance leader to take ownership of our external statutory reporting and help elevate the way we deliver financial insights across a complex and purpose-led organisation.

As our Group External Reporting Manager, you'll lead the preparation and delivery of statutory financial reporting for Australian Unity Limited and its controlled entities, ensuring the highest standards of quality, integrity and compliance with applicable accounting standards and regulatory requirements. You'll be the technical accounting expert, partnering closely with senior finance leaders, auditors and stakeholders across the business to navigate complex reporting requirements and deliver accurate, timely and transparent reporting outcomes.

This is more than a reporting role. It's an opportunity to influence how reporting is done, driving improvements in policy, processes, controls and the adoption of automation and AI to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

The role additionally requires strong communication and relationship skills with other teams across the Platforms including Financial Control, Commercial Finance and Group Taxation.

Key responsibilities include:

Prepare annual and interim financial statements for the

  • AUL Group Consolidation;
  • Controlled entities or other reporting entities; and
  • Solvency Statements

This includes

  • Effective project management of the end-to-end preparation process
    • Comply with the applicable regulatory or compliance framework including International Financial Reporting Standards/Australian Accounting Standards, Corporations Act, ASIC and ASX rules
    • Operate a robust internal control environment that can be verified and documented.
    • External audit queries/audit deliverables are resolved/evidenced satisfactorily and efficiently.
    • Positive feedback from the external auditors as evidenced by a strong working relationship.
Draft Board papers to the Audit committee and senior executives
  • Succinct writing of the facts, issue and outcome
  • Prepared within agreed timeframes
  • Minimal revisions or errors/typos
Design, operate, document procedures and key controls over the preparation process
  • Documents key process, procedures and controls in the financial statement preparation process
  • Maintains the effectiveness of key controls that ensure the preparation process is effective and the output is timely and reliable.
  • Retains evidence of the effectiveness of controls for verification by audit (internal or external) or 2nd line risk.
Support the adoption of new Group accounting policies as well as any new accounting standard and pronouncements
  • Support the Statutory Reporting team in providing technical accounting advice to finance teams Group-wide.
  • Assist in implementing new accounting standards and pronouncements
About You
  • CA or CPA qualified.
  • At least 4-6 years' experience in statutory reporting and/or external auditing (preferably in a Big 4 accounting firm)
  • Sound business acumen and understanding of financial controls and processes.
  • Very strong technical accounting knowledge and statutory reporting skills
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Computer literate in a range of financial software and reporting packages is preferred (e.g. SUN, TM1, OneSource, NomosOne)
  • Relevant industry knowledge is desired, particularly in the healthcare, banking, retirement living, funds management and/or private health insurance industries
