Job summary

The City of Canterbury Bankstown is seeking a Graduate Urban Planner to support the development and review of planning initiatives across environmental, transport, open space, catchment and community infrastructure planning. The City of Canterbury Bankstown is one of the largest Council’s in NSW with the most culturally, socially and economically diverse communities in Sydney. We deliver 21 key services such as childcare, waste collection, parks maintenance, libraries, community facilities and aquatic centres to over 370,000 residents.

The role

As a Graduate Urban Planner, you’ll have the opportunity to work across a diverse range of projects spanning environmental, transport, open space, catchment and community infrastructure planning. You’ll gain hands‑on experience, work with a variety of stakeholders and build your knowledge across the full lifecycle of local government planning and project delivery.

This is a two-year Temporary Full-Time opportunity, commencing in February 2027, designed to provide broad exposure, practical experience and a strong foundation for your career in urban planning.

Duties will include but not be limited to:

• Support the development and review of Council strategies, policies and planning initiatives.
• Research emerging urban planning and Local Government matters.
• Assist with planning advice across development applications, planning proposals and masterplans.
• Contribute to the design and delivery of urban design and public domain projects.
• Work collaboratively with internal stakeholders, consultants and project teams.
• Assist with strategic projects, spatial analysis and mapping across the City.

You will have

• A relevant tertiary qualification in Urban & Regional Planning, Town Planning or a related discipline, completed within 24 months prior to February 2027, and providing eligibility for membership with the Planning Institute of Australia.
• Sound knowledge of environmental planning and Local Government legislation, including the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing presentation materials.

The salary range for this opportunity starts at $74,692 (Grade D, Step 1) + 12% super.
