Job summary

Engine by Starling is recruiting a Graduate Software Engineer for Sydney, Australia. You’ll gain hands-on experience building new features from scratch and delivering real-world outcomes for global clients.

You’ll work in small, collaborative teams, learning on the job from day one, and you’ll join a culture that values curiosity, feedback, and ownership of your projects. The program begins in early 2027 in our Sydney office.

Qualifications

• Recent university graduate or on track to graduate by end of current academic year.

Requirements

What We’re Looking For

You don’t need to have a Computer Science degree to be a great engineer here. We believe in a broad ability to apply yourself and value a genuine interest in software engineering.

• A recent university graduate or on track to graduate at the end of this academic year.
• The ability to demonstrate that you can write quality code.
• Proven experience working in a team.
• Excellent communication skills and a proactive attitude.
• Someone who is open to and values feedback to improve.
• Eligible to work in the Australia and ready to start a full‑time position in early 2027.

Our Tech

Our entire banking platform was built in‑house, primarily using Java. As an engineer at Engine, you will have the opportunity to work with a variety of modern languages and tools, including:

• Languages: Java, JS/TS, Swift, Kotlin
• Tools: Docker, Kubernetes, TeamCity, and Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Interview Journey

Our interviews are a two‑way conversation – it's as much about you getting to know us as it is about us getting to know you. We want you to be curious and ask questions!

• Step 1: One‑way Video Screen: We'll send you a few questions to record your responses.
• Step 2: Take‑home Tech Test: If you're a good fit, you’ll receive a tech test that you can solve in any language you are comfortable with.
• Step 3: Technical Video Interview: A 1.5‑hour video interview where we’ll talk through your tech test.
• Step 4: Final Interview: A final video interview with one of our Engineering Directors.
