You can embrace your curiosity in a culture that celebrates new ideas and diverse perspectives. You can experience a world of opportunity and the chance to shape a career as unique as you.

The Opportunity

Our Geotechnical team is on the lookout for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer or Associate Geotechnical Engineer to join us in Queensland. This role will be based in our Townsville office and we offer the opportunity to work hybrid which means you can work from home when you’re not required on site or at a client’s office.

You will be part of a team delivering geotechnical services across diverse infrastructure, renewable and development projects. From site investigations and testing to foundation design, earthworks, and risk assessments, this role requires a commitment to technical expertise and clear communication with clients and project teams and strong teamwork mentality.

In This Role, You Will
  • Lead and oversee geotechnical aspects as part of a project team and ensuring best practices are followed throughout the project lifecycle
  • Scope and deliver geotechnical projects or components, including planning, budgeting, scheduling, resource allocation, and quality control
  • Plan and supervise site investigations, including borehole drilling, in-situ testing (SPT, CPT, pressuremeter, etc.), sampling, and monitoring
  • Perform geotechnical analyses, including slope stability, bearing capacity, settlement, liquefaction assessment, and seismic response. Design foundations (shallow and deep), earth retaining structures, ground improvement solutions, and pavements
  • Prepare high-quality technical reports, feasibility studies, design documents, and specifications
  • Identify geotechnical risks and develop mitigation strategies
  • Nurture client relationships, attend meetings, and provide geotechnical advice and presentations
  • Mentor and train junior graduate/early career geotechnical engineers and technicians
  • Ensure all geotechnical activities comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations and company policies
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies, software, and methods in geotechnical engineering
The team

WSP Australia’s Geotechnical & Tunnels division unites more than 400 geotechnical, geological, and tunnelling consultants nationwide, recognised for their expertise, collaborative spirit, and commitment to best practice.

By joining us, you will enjoy the best of both worlds: the resources and high‑calibre colleagues of a major consultancy who deliver both multidisciplinary and single‑discipline geotechnical solutions, and the opportunity to solve a diverse array of technical challenges; from local site investigations to landmark mega‑projects in the infrastructure, mining, property, and building sectors.

The Queensland Geotechnical team includes over 70 professionals, supported by a national geophysics team based in Brisbane. You’d be joining a skilled and welcoming group, passionate about geotechnical excellence, client service, and supporting each other’s growth and wellbeing.

About You

You will be able to demonstrate:

  • A great attitude to teamwork, collaboration and communication. A willingness to grow and learn and deliver in our team industry‑leading projects that meet and exceed client expectations.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering or Engineering Geology, or a closely related field (Master’s degree preferred)
  • Chartered or Professional Engineer status (or eligibility) is highly desirable
  • Approximately 7‑10 years of relevant geotechnical engineering experience, ideally in consulting, infrastructure, or construction projects
  • Demonstrated expertise in ground investigation, geotechnical analysis, and design of foundations, earthworks, and retaining structures
  • Awareness and some growing experience in geotechnical software (e.g., PLAXIS, GeoStudio, Slope/W, Settle3D, LPILE, gINT, or equivalent)
  • Strong report writing, communication, and presentation skills
  • Proven ability to manage projects, budgets, and teams
  • Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel to project sites as required

Your passion for geotechnical engineering is matched by your drive to deliver best practice consulting services and to foster an inclusive, energetic team culture.
