Job summary

The Royal Flying Doctor Service in Broken Hill is seeking a General Practitioner with Mental Health Advanced Skills Training to join our multidisciplinary team. You will deliver comprehensive mental health assessments and care across clinic, outreach and telehealth settings, bridging primary care with specialist services in remote communities.

You will mentor GP Registrars and junior doctors, participate in service innovation and maintain high-quality documentation while delivering culturally

Qualifications

• Fellowship of RACGP or ACRRM (or working towards completion).
• Advanced Skills Training (AST) in Mental Health.
• Proven experience managing complex mental health presentations in primary care.
• Commitment to recovery‑oriented, trauma-informed and culturally safe practice.
• Current AHPRA registration and medical indemnity insurance.

Responsibilities

• Deliver comprehensive mental health assessments, care planning and interventions within primary care.
• Manage patients with complex and acute mental health needs in clinic, outreach and telehealth.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to provide integrated care across rural communities.
• Develop shared-care pathways with psychiatrists, telepsychiatry and emergency services.
• Provide mentoring and leadership to GP Registrars, junior doctors and students.
• Contribute to service innovation, community education and stigma reduction.
• Provide general practice services through RFDS clinics, outreach and telehealth.
• Deliver culturally safe and trauma‑informed care respecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander concepts.

• Maintain high‑quality clinical documentation and contribute to evaluation and research.

The Opportunity

We're seeking a General Practitioner with Mental Health Advanced Skills Training (AST) to join our multidisciplinary team in Broken Hill, NSW.

What You'll Be Doing

In this rewarding role, you will:

• Deliver comprehensive mental health assessments, care planning and therapeutic interventions within a primary care setting
• Manage patients presenting with complex and acute mental health conditions
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to provide integrated, holistic care across rural and remote communities
• Develop shared-care pathways with psychiatrists, telepsychiatry services, hospitals and emergency mental health teams
• Provide mentoring and clinical leadership to GP Registrars, junior doctors and medical students
• Contribute to service innovation, community education programs and initiatives that reduce stigma and improve mental health outcomes
• Deliver general practice services through RFDS clinics, outreach programs and telehealth consultations
• Provide culturally safe and trauma-informed care, including care that respects Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander concepts of health and wellbeing
• Participate in quality improvement activities, clinical audits and accreditation processes
• Maintain high-quality clinical documentation and contribute to ongoing service evaluation and research

About You

You are a compassionate and experienced GP who is passionate about improving mental health outcomes for rural and remote communities.

• Fellowship of RACGP or ACRRM (or working towards completion)
• Advanced Skills Training (AST) in Mental Health
• Demonstrated experience managing complex mental health presentations within primary care
• Strong commitment to recovery-oriented, trauma-informed and culturally safe practice
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
• Ability to work autonomously while thriving in a collaborative multidisciplinary environment
• Current AHPRA registration and medical indemnity insurance
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Emergency medicine experience or willingness to undertake relevant training
• Postgraduate qualifications in psychiatry, psychological medicine or mental health
• Previous experience working in rural, remote or underserved communities
• Understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing
• Hospital admitting rights or relevant credentialing
