Job summary

The Big Design Group is seeking a freelance junior designer to join our marketing team, supporting The Big Design Market and The Little Food Market across Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

Design social media graphics, ad assets, e-newsletter graphics and event collateral while collaborating with our in-house team. You’ll gain hands-on experience, with real deadlines and opportunities to work on-site at events.

Qualifications

• A degree or diploma in graphic or communication design, or equivalent experience.
• Experience through internships, study projects or freelance work.
• Confidence in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
• Understanding of print and digital specs, including resolution and export settings.
• Strong eye for layout, typography and colour.
• Attention to detail and the ability to work quickly on multiple jobs at once.
• A portfolio showing digital and social design work.

Responsibilities

• Design social media graphics and carousels for Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn
• Resize and adapt ad creative across Meta, Google and other platforms
• Build e-newsletter graphics from the marketing team’s copy and briefs
• Create website banners and update image assets on both event websites
• Prepare marketing asset packs for exhibitors and sponsors (social media graphics, email banners, logos)
• Design event collateral such as signage, maps, programs and print pieces
• Help prepare exhibitor and sponsor images, logos and bios for websites
• Set up and export files correctly for print and digital
• Follow brand guidelines for multiple markets and keep consistency across cities
• Help on site at some events, for example with photography or content capture
• Manage your own workload against campaign deadlines and flag hold-ups early

Job description

The Big Design Group is looking for a freelance junior designer to join our marketing team. We run The Big Design Market and The Little Food Market, two much-loved design and food events held across Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

You’ll take on the everyday design work that keeps our campaigns moving: social media graphics, ad resizes, e-newsletter graphics, exhibitor assets and event collateral. It’s a hands-on role with plenty of variety, real deadlines and the chance to see your work in market and on site at our events.

You’ll work alongside our in-house senior designer, social media lead and marketing manager, and learn how a busy events marketing team works from brief to launch.

Key responsibilities

Supporting the team

• Pick up general design requests from across the marketing team
• Support our senior designer on larger campaign pieces and keep files and templates organised
• Set up and export files correctly for print and digital
• Follow brand guidelines for both markets and keep work consistent across cities
• Help on site at some events, for example with photography or content capture
• Manage your own workload against campaign deadlines and flag hold-ups early

Skills and experience

You’ll need

• A degree or diploma in graphic or communication design, or equivalent experience
• Some design experience through internships, study projects or freelance work. Final-year students and recent graduates are welcome to apply
• Confidence in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)
• An understanding of print and digital specs, including resolution and export settings
• A strong eye for layout, typography and colour
• Attention to detail and the ability to work quickly on multiple jobs at once
• Openness to feedback and a willingness to learn
• A portfolio showing digital and social design work

Nice to have

• Basic motion or video editing (Premiere, After Effects or CapCut)
• Experience with e-newsletter platforms or website content management
• An interest in design, makers, food or events
