Job summary

The Queensland Government seeks a Forensic Biologist to contribute to a state-wide forensic biology service within Forensic Science Queensland, applying scientific judgement to analyze specimens and samples and support the integrity of the Queensland justice system.

You will work in a multi-disciplinary team, undertake DNA interpretation and reporting, stay compliant with NATA/ISO standards, and participate in quality improvement and professional development.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake forensic DNA interpretation, statistical evaluation and reporting according to accredited protocols.
  • Evaluate forensic intelligence results from DNA database searches (NCIDD).
  • Apply scientific knowledge to solve problems within forensic biology.
  • Collaborate with team and communicate with clients and stakeholders.
  • Participate in introduction of new technologies and process development.
  • Develop knowledge through active learning and professional development.
  • Participate in quality practices and service improvements, including document reviews.
  • Ensure work complies with legislative, administrative and professional standards to meet accreditation.
  • Maintain health and safety practices and contribute to a positive workplace culture.
  • Operate with supervision appropriate to experience level.

The Scientist role will contribute to the delivery of a state-wide forensic biology service, in line with the policies, guidelines and strategies of Forensic Science Queensland. Contribute to FSQ’s vision of becoming a world-class leader in the delivery of quality, timely and innovative forensic services, that ultimately supports the integrity of the Queensland justice system.

The Forensic Biologist role uses knowledge, skills and experience to apply independent scientific judgement in the analysis of specimens and samples.

Your key responsibilities
  • Undertake forensic DNA interpretation, statistical evaluation and reporting pertaining to volume crime matters using well established accredited protocols, standards and instrumentation within a multi-speciality team in line with prescribed professional and ethical standards
  • Evaluate and provide forensic intelligence results developed from DNA database searches, including the National Criminal Intelligence DNA database (NCIDD).
  • Apply scientific knowledge within the discipline of forensic biology to solve scientific problems.
  • Work cooperatively, collaboratively and communicate effectively within Forensic Science Queensland and with clients and stakeholders, both internal and external to the laboratory.
  • Actively participate in the activities of the multi-speciality team, including participating in the introduction of new technologies and development of processes in the work area.
  • Develop scientific knowledge and expertise through active learning within the team, engaging in professional development activities and collaboration.
  • Participate in quality practices and service improvement activities including the review and improvement of documents, processes and workflows to collaboratively strive for best practice.
  • Ensure work is compliant with all relevant legislative, administrative, and professional standards to meet NATA/ISO accreditation/certification requirements to provide quality scientific practice.
  • Adhere to defined service quality standards, health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
  • Contribute to a positive organisational culture and creation of a safe and innovative environment for staff through team meetings, participation in training and development, performance appraisals and other measures.
  • Operate with moderate supervision and increasing professional accountability commensurate with level of experience.
  • Other duties as determined by the Team Leader or Executive Manager, Databasing Intelligence and Identification.
