Qualifications

• HC licence (minimum) required; MC licence highly regarded.
• Minimum 2 years’ heavy vehicle driving experience.
• Proven experience transporting over-dimensional and in-gauge freight.
• Strong understanding of NHVR regulations and Chain of Responsibility requirements.
• Knowledge of load restraint practices and safety procedures.
• Current White Card and ability to pass a pre-employment medical.

About the Role

As a Float Driver with Big Chief Hire, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient transport of trucks, earthmoving equipment and plant machinery across metropolitan Adelaide and regional South Australia. You’ll ensure all loads are secured correctly, travel requirements are met, and deliveries are completed safely and on time, while complying with NHVR regulations and Chain of Responsibility (COR) requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Safely load, unload and transport heavy machinery, plant equipment and oversized freight using float trailers.
• Transport both over-dimensional and in-gauge freight in accordance with relevant requirements.
• Navigate metropolitan Adelaide, regional South Australia and approved OSOM routes safely and efficiently.
• Ensure compliance with the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL), road laws, OSOM permits, mass and dimension limits, and applicable travel conditions.
• Apply correct load restraint methods and ensure all loads are secured in accordance with safety requirements.
• Safely operate mobile plant and equipment for loading and unloading where required.
• Conduct daily pre-start checks and ensure vehicles, trailers and equipment are maintained in a safe and roadworthy condition.
• Manage fatigue in accordance with regulations and company policies.
• Maintain accurate transport records, permits and required documentation.
• Follow all workplace health and safety procedures and maintain a strong safety focus

About You

• Current HC licence as a minimum, with an MC licence highly regarded.
• Minimum of 2 years’ heavy vehicle driving experience.
• Proven experience transporting both over-dimensional and in-gauge freight.
• Low loader experience highly regarded.
• Strong understanding of NHVR regulations, Chain of Responsibility requirements and load restraint.
• Ability to safely operate mobile plant for loading and unloading.
• Current White Card.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment medical.
• Strong knowledge of metropolitan Adelaide and regional South Australian roads.
• Reliable, safety-focused and able to work independently while making sound operational decisions.
• Good communication skills and a commitment to following procedures and meeting delivery requirements.
