Job summary

HorizonOne has partnered with a well-established Australian company to recruit a Financial Controller for a capital-intensive, project-based environment. The role leads the accounting team, owns core accounting processes, and drives monthly and annual reporting to support strategic decisions.

You will oversee GL, fixed assets, AP, month-end, and external reporting, while providing technical accounting guidance across the group. A CA/CPA and prior leadership experience are required.

Qualifications

• Ex-Big 4 or mid-tier audit trained accounting professional with CA/CPA
• Strong technical accounting depth and ability to lead teams
• Experience in property, construction or development environments is highly regarded
• Excellent stakeholder engagement and analytical skills

Responsibilities

• Manage general ledger and fixed asset register, approve journals, reconciliations and accounting entries
• Lead Accounts Payable and oversee transactional finance, payments, reconciliations and controls
• Manage month-end close, monthly and annual financial reporting, and external audit process
• Oversee external reporting obligations, data collection, controls and assurance
• Provide technical accounting advice across the business and maintain financial policies and controls

The Opportunity

Reporting to the CFO, this is an opportunity to lead the accounting team, with scope to improve processes and systems along the way.

This is a hands-on operational leadership role with significant breadth and complexity. Leading a small cohort across financial accounting and transactional finance, the Financial Controller is central to the delivery of monthly and annual financial reporting and provides technical accounting advice across the group of businesses, with ownership of the core accounting and Accounts Payable functions.

The Role

Key responsibilities include:

• Managing the general ledger and fixed asset register, including approval of journals, reconciliations and accounting transactions
• Leading the Accounts Payable function and overseeing the transactional finance cycle, including payment processing, reconciliations and payment controls
• Managing month-end, the preparation of monthly and annual financial reporting, and the external audit process
• Overseeing external reporting obligations, including data collection, supporting controls and external assurance
• Providing technical accounting advice across the business, managing taxation compliance information for external advisers, and maintaining financial policies, procedures and controls

The Ideal Person

You are likely an ex Big 4 or mid-tier audit trained accounting professional, with a CA or CPA and strong technical accounting depth. You have progressed your career to now have a sound track record of leading teams. Experience within property, construction or development environments will be highly regarded.

You bring well developed stakeholder engagement and analytical skills, sound knowledge of accounting standards and their practical application, and a pragmatic, commercially minded approach. You enjoy a fast-paced role, working from the office.

You enjoy improving processes, building team capability and delivering high-quality financial outcomes.

This will suit an experienced Financial Controller, or a senior finance professional ready to step up.
