About Us
Pinelake is a production nursery at Nowergup, north of Perth, growing for the independent Perth market, including garden centres, landscapers and designers. Production is expanding quickly, and this role has been created to manage propagation through that expansion.
The Role
This is a hands-on role reporting to the Head of Production. You will propagate alongside a small team of propagators who report to you, and manage the propagation program for the site collaboratively with the Head of Production and the owners. That includes planning production against the volumes the nursery needs and running the stock plant program that supplies it. We are looking for someone who can see where the program could work better, build efficient workflows that meet the nursery’s rapidly expanding needs, and introduce new techniques to the team.
Key Responsibilities
Propagate from seed, cuttings and division, across a range that includes a strong focus on Australian natives, and prepare propagation material, media and trays
Lead and mentor a small team of propagators, working alongside them day to day
Manage the propagation program in collaboration with the Head of Production and the owners
Contribute to production planning, working out the volumes required for each line and scheduling propagation to meet them
Establish and manage the stock plant program, including the selection, maintenance and renewal of stock plants
Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and design workflows that respond to the nursery’s growth
Trial and introduce new propagation techniques, and train the team in them
Manage irrigation, humidity and environmental conditions in propagation areas
Monitor plant health, hygiene and pest and disease pressure, and apply treatments as needed
Keep accurate records of propagation activity, strike rates and volumes against plan
Maintain tools, equipment and work areas to a high standard
Skills and Experience
Several years of propagation experience across a wide range of plants in a commercial production nursery, ideally with a specialisation in Australian natives
Experience leading or supervising a small team while working hands‑on
Experience contributing to production planning and managing propagation volumes against demand
Strong knowledge of plant health, hygiene, and pest and disease management in propagation settings
A record of improving propagation workflows or processes in a previous role
Well organised, with accurate record keeping
Physically fit and comfortable with manual handling
Highly Regarded
Experience establishing or running a stock plant program
Certificate III or above in Nursery Operations or Horticulture, or equivalent experience
Chemical handling training or accreditation
Experience using production planning or inventory systems
