Job description

  • Lead an established Hazmat team of ~6 without inheriting a heavy BD target
  • Hawthorn / Melbourne base + hybrid flexibility; Directors & Ops support around you
Environmental Team Leader - Asbestos, Hazmat & Mould

$95,000 - $110,000 + Super + TOIL | Flex to ~$120,000 for the right person

As a Team Leader in Asbestos, Hazardous Materials & Mould, step into the bit of consulting that good Senior Consultants eventually want: more say over how projects and people are run, without spending your entire week in management meetings.

You’ll inherit an established team of around six and remain roughly 65–75% billable. You’re still close to the technical work, clients and projects, but now you’re setting the pace, helping consultants make decisions and making sure multiple jobs keep moving.

Importantly, you’re not being handed a Team Leader title and then quietly told to become the salesperson, operations manager and spreadsheet administrator too. Directors and dedicated BD resources generate the work, an Operations Coordinator supports the business, and project performance is tracked through established systems.

The Role

This is a delivery-led leadership position across asbestos, hazardous materials and mould consulting.

You’ll manage repeat clients, coordinate the team and remain technically involved across healthcare remediation, commercial property portfolios, rail and transport infrastructure, government work and asbestos removal projects.

You’ll:

  • Lead and mentor approximately six Hazmat consultants
  • Coordinate workloads, project resourcing, priorities and deadlines
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects and repeat client relationships
  • Oversee asbestos and hazardous materials surveys and risk assessments
  • Deliver and oversee visual clearances and asbestos air monitoring
  • Manage larger asbestos remediation programs
  • Review technical reports, scopes and project documentation
  • Work directly with clients, removalists and project teams
  • Keep standards high around technical quality, responsiveness and delivery
  • Remain approximately 65–75% billable rather than moving completely off the tools
The Team

This is a growing tier-two environmental consultancy: substantial enough to handle major programs and multi-site portfolios, but small enough that you can still get a Director on the phone without submitting a meeting request for next Thursday.

The broader business combines environmental consulting, contaminated land, occupational hygiene, laboratory services and landscape / vegetation capabilities.

The Hazmat function is being restructured around clearer Team Leader positions. You’ll have support from Directors, other technical leaders, operations, BD and an in-house laboratory rather than being left to run your six-person island alone.

There’s a new Hawthorn presence alongside the established Geelong office, with Melbourne preferred for this hire and hybrid flexibility available.

Experience

You don’t need to be a 20-year industry veteran. A strong Senior ready for their first formal leadership role could make a lot of sense here.

Ideally you’ll bring:

  • 5+ years' Hazmat / asbestos consulting experience; 7+ years is ideal
  • Strong asbestos inspections, air monitoring and visual clearance experience
  • Experience delivering asbestos remediation / hazardous materials projects
  • Good understanding of Victorian asbestos requirements
  • Confidence managing several projects and client priorities simultaneously
  • Strong technical reporting and QA skills
  • The ability to mentor people, set expectations and keep delivery moving
  • Mould experience is useful but not essential
  • Relevant environmental, science, occupational hygiene, WHS or engineering qualifications

$95,000 - $110,000 + super + TOIL, with flexibility towards $120,000 for a strong candidate.
