Job summary

Sandfire is seeking an Environment and Closure Advisor for DeGrussa, WA, on a 7-on/7-off roster. The role focuses on environmental compliance, closure planning, and rehabilitation activities at the site with close coordination with regulators and internal teams.

The successful candidate will bring 5+ years in environmental roles (2+ in mining), a degree in Environmental Science, and GIS experience to support data-driven closure strategies and permit administration.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years’ experience in environmental roles, with at least 2 in mining
  • Tertiary qualification in Environmental Science (or similar)
  • Proficiency with GIS software (ArcGIS and/or QGIS)
  • Solid grasp of compliance monitoring, sampling, reporting and EMS
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • First Aid desirable; snake handling a bonus
  • Willingness to grow and take ownership of closure activities

Responsibilities

  • Heading out into the field to conduct environmental inspections - verifying performance for water quality, dust management, hazardous materials and waste management
  • Monitoring flora, fauna, weeds, pests and rehabilitation, to track progress towards successful restoration of native ecosystems
  • Supervising contractors and consultants working on environmental and closure-related activities - ensuring work is done safely, efficiently, and in line with approvals
  • Calibrating and maintaining monitoring equipment, to ensure environmental data collected is accurate and reliable
  • Verifying and analysing data, identifying trends, and using insights to inform and adapt closure strategies and manage environmental risk
  • Preparing high quality reports for internal teams and regulators, contributing to compliance reporting, corporate ESG disclosures and formal closure documentation
  • Supporting the administration of Land Use Permits, ensuring no works are done without the correct authorisations
  • Participating in incident investigations and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives
  • Providing technical environmental advice to team members, contractors and other stakeholders on-site
  • Oversee administration of the site's geospatial database, and helping to manage closure risk registers
  • Engaging with stakeholders - including Traditional Owners, local communities, and regulators - to ensure transparency and collaboration
  • Delivering training and awareness programs when required, and helping others understand their environmental responsibilities

Job description

Sandfire currently has an opportunity for an Environment and Closure advisor to join our team. Reporting to the Environment Manager, you will be responsible for driving environmental compliance and supporting the implementation of mine closure strategies at DeGrussa. This hands‑on, site‑based role, operating on a 7-days on 7-days off roster, will see you working closely with internal stakeholders, contractors, and regulators to ensure that closure and rehabilitation activities are safe, compliant, and aligned with Sandfire’s values and operational model - "The Sandfire Way".

As the Environment and Closure Advisor, your work will be a dynamic mix of field-based monitoring, hands‑on supervision, and technical environmental planning - all to support one clear goal: to ensure closure of DeGrussa is executed to the highest standard.

Here’s What Your Typical Day Will Look Like

About You

You’re someone who thrives outdoors, is skilled in good environmental management practices and can confidently navigate WA’s mining and environmental legislation. You’ve worked in mining before and are ready to take ownership of closure activities that truly matter.

  • Tertiary qualification in Environmental Science (or similar)
  • 5+ years’ experience in environmental roles, with at least 2 in mining
  • A solid grasp of compliance monitoring, sampling, reporting and environmental management systems
  • Proficiency with GIS software (ArcGIS and/or QGIS)
  • A proactive mindset, strong problem-solving skills, and great verbal and written communication
  • First Aid desirable; snake handling a bonus!
