EOS News Job Summary

Job Summary

EOS is building our high energy laser weapon capability. The Directed Energy group develops and demonstrates laser systems in the tens to hundreds of kilowatts class for counter‑uncrewed aircraft system (C-UAS) and short range air defence roles, spanning the laser source, beam director, tracking and fire control, power and thermal management, and platform integration. This role is the practical bridge between engineering and the field. You will build and integrate the systems in Canberra, take them to the range, and keep them running through trials and customer demonstrations. You will also be trained and qualified as a system operator, running the console during live serials and demonstrations. It suits an experienced technician or ex-service tradesperson with a weapons, range or trials background: someone who wants ownership of a whole system rather than one bench, and who would rather be on the range than at a desk. Range and weapon system experience is essential, not a nice to have. Every role in this team spends time in the field. Our systems are proven at the test range and on trial sites, and you will be there when that happens.

Primary duties

The job plays a pivotal role in turning designs into working, maintainable systems and in sustaining them through integration, trials and demonstrations. You will provide expertise in the build, integration, maintenance and field support of complex electro-mechanical and optical systems, and, as an additional duty, in operating them on the range.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build, assemble and integrate laser system hardware across optical, mechanical, electrical and fluid subsystems, working to drawings and work instructions.
  • Fabricate, terminate and test cable harnesses, fluid lines and mechanical assemblies to defence quality standards.
  • Set up, operate and maintain the system during laboratory testing, range trials and customer demonstrations, running engagement sequences under the direction of the trial director and laser safety officer.
  • Perform first and second line maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair, including component replacement, recalibration and realignment.
  • Prepare, transport, set up and pack down the system for range activities, including the handling, lifting and tie-down of heavy and sensitive assemblies.
  • Maintain configuration, maintenance and defect records, and feed observed issues back to engineering with enough detail to be actionable.
  • Contribute to and improve work instructions, maintenance procedures, spares lists and training material based on hands‑on experience.
  • Uphold safety on the shop floor and on the range, including range safety procedures, laser safety, electrical safety and manual handling, in accordance with the Work Health and Safety Act.
Experience Essential
  • Trade qualification or Advanced Diploma in an electrical, electronic, mechanical or mechatronic discipline, or equivalent ADF technical training.
  • Minimum 5 years in the build, integration, test or maintenance of complex electro‑mechanical systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in a military, weapons or range environment, whether as an ADF technician or operator, at a proof and experimental establishment, or supporting live fire trials, including familiarity with range safety procedures and trial discipline.
  • Ability to work from engineering drawings, schematics and wiring diagrams without close supervision, and to fault‑find with multimeters, oscilloscopes and system diagnostics.
  • Experience with precision assembly and the careful handling of sensitive equipment, ideally including optics.
  • Demonstrated competence operating complex equipment under supervision and procedure, and clear record keeping.
  • Current driver licence and the physical capability for field work, including manual handling and extended outdoor work.
  • Willingness to spend extended periods at the test range and other trial sites within Australia, including out‑of-hours work around demonstration campaigns.
Highly regarded
  • Prior experience in a field service or field support role, or as a weapon system operator.
  • Laser safety training, or experience working around Class 4 lasers.
  • Electrical safety, high voltage, elevated work platform or forklift licences.
  • Experience delivering operator or maintainer training.
