Job summary

Department of Education Victoria – Hamlyn Heights VIC is seeking an experienced Education Support staff member to provide individualised support to a student with complex learning, communication and behavioural needs. This role works closely with teachers and the wider support team to promote student wellbeing, safety and participation in school life.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to develop positive, respectful and trusting relationships with students with diverse learning and behavioural needs.
• Ability to recognise and respond to a range of behaviours using positive, proactive strategies and remain calm.
• Ability to follow and implement individual student support strategies with teachers and the school team.

Responsibilities

• Provide dedicated one-to-one support to students with complex behavioural, communication and learning needs.
• Develop and maintain positive, trusting relationships with students.
• Support students to engage in classroom learning, routines and activities across the school environment.
• Implement individualised behaviour support strategies and student plans under the direction of the classroom teacher and relevant school staff.
• Assist students to recognise and manage emotions, develop self-regulation and use appropriate communication strategies.
• Recognise triggers and early signs of dysregulation and respond proactively.
• Provide calm, consistent and predictable support during heightened emotion or behaviours of concern.
• Support student safety by following school procedures and individual strategies.
• Assist with transitions between activities, classrooms and other areas as required.
• Encourage independence, participation, social interaction and sense of belonging.
• Work closely with classroom teachers and education support team to ensure consistency in support.
• Communicate observations, progress and concerns to the school team.
• Assist with strategies to reduce concerning behaviours and increase positive engagement.
• Maintain student dignity, privacy and confidentiality at all times.
• Be flexible and responsive to student needs and use initiative within individual support plans.
• Contribute to a safe, inclusive and respectful learning environment.
