Job summary

Umwelt Australia is seeking a Graduate or Experienced Field Ecologist for casual opportunities. Our skilled, supportive, expanding team works on biodiversity projects across South Australia as renewable energy and conservation balance drives demand.

This field-based role targets surveys in spring and summer 2026/2027 across various locations. Candidates should have a degree in environmental science or related field, willingness to travel, experience in ecological surveys, and GIS/data capture

Qualifications

  • Degree or postgraduate in environmental science, botany, zoology or related field.
  • Willingness to travel for ecological fieldwork, including extended rural trips.
  • Experience in undertaking ecological surveys and passion for flora/fauna.
  • Ability to work in a professional team or autonomously with clear communication.
  • Experience in GIS and electronic data capture preferred.
  • Appreciation of WHS matters.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct ecological fieldwork and biodiversity surveys across South Australia.
  • Map vegetation and habitat and document flora and fauna data.
  • Travel to diverse field locations, including remote regional areas.

About the Opportunity:

Umwelt's portfolio has more new and exciting projects in the biodiversity sector, which is expanding as South Australia moves towards renewable energy and tries to balance development with strategic conservation and offsetting outcomes. This expansion offers exciting prospects for enthusiastic ecologists at any career stage, from early to senior, who want to be part of a team with steady work and incredible project diversity.

We are a growing company with a vision to make a difference, and we are looking for Field Ecologists at all levels who are ready to enhance their ecological consulting career working within our South Australian ecology team. We seek candidates who have finished their studies and acquired some experience in conducting ecological field work and who are keen to travel and develop their technical skills in mapping vegetation and habitat and undertaking flora and fauna surveys. This role is field based, targeting surveys in spring and summer 2026/2027 in a range of locations throughout South Australia.

About You:
  • A degree or postgraduate qualification (or in progress) in environmental science, botany, zoology, or a related field
  • A strong desire to work flexible hours and travel for ecological fieldwork including possible trips of extended duration (one week or greater) in rural or remote regions
  • Experience in undertaking ecological surveys and a demonstrated passion for flora and/or fauna
  • Ability to work in a professional team as well as autonomously. Capability to effectively communicate with team members
  • Experience in GIS and electronic data capture (preferred)
  • Appreciation of the importance of WHS matters
