Job description
Director Queen Victoria Museum & Art Gallery

Director Queen Victoria Museum & Art Gallery - City of Launceston (Tasmania)

Launceston offers an exceptional quality of life, blending natural beauty with a vibrant, welcoming community. Set at the gateway to the stunning Tamar Valley, the city is surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, rivers, and parks-perfect for an active, outdoor lifestyle. Recognised as one of Australia's most liveable regional cities, Launceston combines urban convenience with a relaxed pace, making it ideal for families and professionals alike.

The city boasts world-class education, a thriving arts and events scene, and a rich food culture rooted in its agricultural heritage. As one of only two UNESCO Cities of Gastronomy in Australia, Launceston celebrates fresh produce, local markets, and innovative dining. With historic architecture, walkable streets, and a strong sense of community, Launceston is a place where lifestyle, culture, and opportunity come together.

The City of Launceston is the largest Local Government Authority in Northern Tasmania with over 600 staff supporting a population of over 71,000 residents.

QVMAG is the Heart and Soul of the Community

Under the guidance of a new Executive Leadership Team, The City of Launceston is embarking on a city‑shaping journey to "Launceston 2035". Based on a solid financial foundation, and a hunger for fresh ideas and directions, this is the perfect time to join QVMAG – Australia's largest regional museum and public art gallery spanning two sites and boasting an extraordinary natural science collection, along with culturally significant antiquities, books and artworks.

The Role

Reporting directly to the Executive Leader Connections and Liveability, the Director QVMAG will see you continue the journey to the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery's vision of being a 'must‑see' Launceston attraction. As the Director, you will lead a multidisciplinary team and work collaboratively across the organisation to advance the City of Launceston's strategic goals while enriching Tasmania's cultural, educational, and economic landscape.

You will lead QVMAG's cultural, educational and operational outcomes through strong staff and stakeholder engagement, curatorial expertise and collection management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop QVMAG's long‑term strategic plan, leading the evolution of the organisation as a vibrant, innovative, and community‑focused cultural institution.
  • Oversee the curation and delivery of high‑quality exhibitions, programs, and learning experiences that engage diverse audiences.
  • Lead, mentor, and empower a multidisciplinary team of professionals, fostering creativity, inclusion, and accountability.
  • Oversee budgets, grants and funding strategies, and business planning to ensure long‑term sustainability.
  • Build strong partnerships with Aboriginal and extended communities, education, tourism, and cultural sectors.
  • Manage procurement processes within authorisations, and ensuring QVMAG operates within relevant legislative, heritage and governance frameworks.
About You

As a leader, you will be proactive, innovative and a strong communicator. You'll bring a collaborative and strategic approach to achieving the creative vision of QVMAG. A background in local is highly desirable; but overall, your ability to implement good business practice while taking the team and community on the journey will be of most importance.

Employee Benefits
  • Professional development and further leadership opportunities
  • Competitive remuneration package
  • Bonus RDOs throughout the year via 19/20 monthly working pattern
  • Inclusive and values‑driven culture

It is a requirement for this role that you have a relevant tertiary qualification and leadership experience in museum, gallery, or cultural institution.
