The focus of STARTTS’ approach is on building capacity and empowering people and communities to take control over their own lives, using a strengths-based approach and building on individual, family, community and cultural strengths.

Position Details

Position No: 1165-1 | Closing date: Monday, 26 February 2024 | Work type: Full‑time, 38 hours per week | Contract up to 30 June 2025 (subject to ongoing funding).

Salary: Health Education Officer classification based on qualifications and experience. A generous salary packaging scheme is also offered.

Role Overview

The role provides individual and group treatment to children and adolescents and liaises with schools in the region.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver individual assessment and short-to-medium term interventions with children and adolescents.
  • Run group sessions with children and adolescents.
  • Liaise with schools and coordinate service delivery.
  • Advocate and support community development initiatives.
Essential Skills and Qualifications
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in health, counselling, behavioural or social sciences.
  • Demonstrated understanding of refugee issues and the effects of torture and trauma on families, children and adolescents from a refugee background.
  • Experience in conducting individual assessment and short-to-medium term interventions with children and adolescents.
  • Experience in running groups with children and adolescents.
  • Understanding of the NSW Education system and needs of children and adolescents.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Experience working independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team within a multicultural environment.
  • Advocacy and community development skills and experience.
  • Current NSW Driver’s Licence.
Desirable Skills and Qualifications
  • Experience conducting consultancy and support for school counsellors and teachers working with refugee children and adolescents.
  • Community development skills and experience in a multicultural context.

Vaccination Requirements

This Category A role requires meeting and maintaining the vaccination criteria, including annual influenza vaccinations and two doses of an approved COVID‑19 vaccine. Evidence of vaccination for measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, hepatitis B, diphtheria, pertussis and tuberculosis must also be provided. Failure to comply may result in withdrawal of the offer. Medical contraindications require documented evidence.
