Job summary

Department of Defence in Canberra is seeking APS Legal Officers (APS 3–6 and EL1) to join the General Counsel – Dispute Resolution and Litigation Branch. You will manage and advise on a diverse range of litigation and disputes, including sensitive matters, working closely with external counsel and internal client groups.

The team handles claims against the Commonwealth, court processes, and complex dispute matters, requiring proactive risk management and strong analytical and communication

Qualifications

• Experience in managing litigation and dispute resolution matters across diverse cases.
• Familiarity with engaging external legal service providers and counsel.
• Ability to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines.
• Strong attention to detail and client relationship management.

Responsibilities

• Manage, assess and advise on a broad range of litigation and disputes for Defence.
• Collaborate with internal client areas, external advisers and counsel.
• Coordinate with external legal service providers and counsel on litigated claims.
• Respond to court orders, subpoenas and other requests; manage risk and reputational considerations.
• Support historic and ongoing litigation streams and ensure timely delivery of outcomes.
