Job description

At ING, we believe trust is fundamental to how we serve our customers. As a leading digital bank serving more than 2 million customers in Australia, we're continuing to strengthen our approach to privacy, data protection and responsible data use to support innovation while maintaining customer trust.

Reporting to the Data Protection Lead, the Data Protection Steward plays a key role in shaping and maturing ING Australia's data protection capability within the Data Office. Working across business, technology, risk and data teams, you'll help embed sustainable data protection practices into products, processes and change initiatives, enabling the organisation to innovate with confidence while protecting customer information.

This is a highly visible role offering broad exposure across multiple business areas and the opportunity to influence stakeholders at all levels of the organisation. You'll contribute to strategic initiatives spanning privacy governance, personal data management, data lifecycle management, regulatory change, adoption of market-leading data protection capabilities and emerging AI governance, helping drive the ongoing evolution of data protection as a key pillar of ING Australia's Data Office.

At ING, you'll be empowered to shape what's next. You'll join a collaborative and inclusive culture built on trust, curiosity and continuous learning, where you'll have the opportunity to grow your expertise, broaden your network and contribute to initiatives that have a meaningful impact on our customers, colleagues and business. If you're passionate about protecting customer trust, enabling responsible innovation and helping shape the future of data protection, we'd love to hear from you.

What you'll do …

  • Partner with stakeholders across business, technology, risk and data teams to embed sustainable privacy and data protection practices into business operations, products, and strategic change initiatives.
  • Support Data Owners and accountable business stakeholders in fulfilling their responsibilities for the effective management and protection of personal information.
  • Provide trusted advisory and practical guidance on privacy obligations, ING Group standards and data protection controls, enabling business outcomes while managing data protection risks.
  • Drive privacy-by-design practices across change initiatives, ensuring data protection requirements are considered early in the delivery lifecycle.
  • Support implementation of data retention, deletion and information lifecycle management requirements to ensure personal information is appropriately managed throughout its lifecycle.
  • Translate complex data protection issues, risks and reporting insights into clear recommendations and risk positions, supporting governance forums to make informed decisions and drive effective risk management.
  • Collaborate with local, global and cross-functional teams to shape and implement common data protection standards, processes and capabilities, representing ING Australia in global forums and working groups.
  • Help shape the ongoing evolution of ING Australia's Data Protection capability through continuous improvement initiatives spanning privacy governance, responsible data use and emerging AI governance.

What we're looking for….

  • Demonstrated experience in privacy, data protection, data governance, risk management or information management within a complex organisation. Experience working within business change, project delivery or Agile environments.
  • Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills, with experience partnering across business, technology, risk and data teams to drive outcomes and manage competing priorities.
  • Working knowledge of Australian privacy requirements and relevant data protection obligations, including familiarity with frameworks such as GDPR, CDR, PCI DSS, APRA prudential standards or similar regulatory requirements, and the ability to translate obligations into practical business outcomes.
  • Ability to identify and assess risks, develop clear recommendations, and communicate complex matters effectively through governance reporting, committee papers or executive-level communications.
  • Practical experience supporting privacy governance activities, including RoPAs, DPIAs, Privacy by Design, personal data management, and data retention and deletion initiatives.
  • Understanding of broader data management disciplines and their relationship to privacy and data protection outcomes, with exposure to AI governance or responsible AI practices.
  • Experience within financial services or another highly regulated industry, and/or relevant certifications such as CIPP, CIPM, CIPT, AIGP or CDMP.

What's in it for you?

  • Discounted ING Health Insurance.
  • An additional Rest Day to support your wellbeing.
  • An IMPACT Day to volunteer on approved sustainability activity.
