Job summary

The Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council in Sydney CBD NSW is seeking a Data Analyst to develop our data, reporting and health intelligence functions to support evidence-based decision‑making and continuous improvement. You’ll analyse data from population health, government, Aboriginal health, survey and program sources, applying data analytics to identify trends and inform strategy.

Working across the organisation, you’ll develop dashboards and indicators to support Closing the Gap

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualification in Data Analytics or related field.
• Experience in data analysis, reporting and visualisation with large datasets.
• Proficiency in Excel, Power BI, SQL and R or similar tools.
• Understanding of data governance, privacy, information management and data quality principles.
• Commitment to Aboriginal Community Controlled Health principles.
• Ability to obtain National Police Check and Working with Children Check.

The Aboriginal Health & Medical Research Council of NSW (AH&MRC) is the peak body for Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services across New South Wales. We work alongside our Members to strengthen Aboriginal community-controlled healthcare and improve the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.

Our work spans advocacy, policy, workforce development, health promotion, research, training and organisational support. We bring the experience and priorities of our Members into state and national decision-making, advocate for better health systems and investment, and help build the capability and sustainability of the Aboriginal community-controlled health sector.

About the Role

The Data Analyst is responsible for developing and implementing the organisation's data, reporting and health intelligence functions to support evidence-based decision‑making, advocacy, research, evaluation and continuous improvement.

You’ll analyse data from population health, government, Aboriginal health, survey and program sources, applying data analytics, epidemiology and population health principles to identify trends, monitor outcomes and inform strategy.

Working across the organisation and with external stakeholders, you’ll develop dashboards, reports, indicators and evidence products that support Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services, Closing the Gap priorities and improved health outcomes.

The role also promotes strong data governance, quality, integrity and Aboriginal Data Sovereignty, while building organisational capability in using data and evidence.

Responsibilities

Data & Governance

• Develop and maintain data frameworks, governance, standards and processes that support data quality, integrity and effective use.
• Establish secure systems for data collection, storage, management and reporting.
• Analyse population health, service utilisation and outcome data to identify trends, disparities, risks and emerging issues.
• Apply epidemiological methods to support health surveillance, evidence briefs and Closing the Gap monitoring.

Data Management & Reporting

• Source, extract, clean, validate and integrate data from government, population health and sector datasets, working with data custodians as required.
• Develop dashboards, reports, scorecards and visualisations using Power BI and related tools to communicate insights clearly.
• Maintain secure storage systems, data dictionaries, metadata and documentation.

Research, Evaluation & Stakeholder Support

• Support research and evaluation through data analysis, collection tools, performance measures and outcome reporting.
• Work with internal teams and stakeholders to identify data needs, provide advice and present findings clearly.
• Identify improvements to data systems, reporting and analytical approaches, keeping informed of emerging trends and best practice.
• Contribute to organisational planning, continuous improvement and data capability.

Qualifications & Experience:

• Tertiary qualification in Data Analytics, Statistics, Public Health, Information Management, Research, Economics or a related field.
• Demonstrated experience in data analysis, reporting and visualisation, including working with large and multiple datasets.
• Proficiency in Excel, Power BI, SQL and R or similar analytical/statistical tools.
• Experience in health, community services, research or Aboriginal health is desirable.
• Understanding of data governance, privacy, information management and data quality principles.
• Understanding of, and commitment to, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health principles and values.
• Able to obtain a National Police Check and current Working with Children Check.
