Job summary

Aboriginal Legal Service is seeking an Intermediate Solicitor (Criminal Law Practice) in NSW to lead the criminal law team across Bourke, Moree or Walgett. You will provide expert criminal law advice and representation, mentor colleagues, and drive advocacy, community engagement and operational excellence.

You will supervise, mentor and develop junior solicitors, strengthen advocacy and ensure culturally appropriate services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.

Qualifications

• NSW Practising Certificate and minimum of 2 years’ experience in Criminal Law.
• Strong criminal law expertise, including practice, procedure and complex LC/CC, District Court and EAGP matters.
• Proven advocacy and leadership skills, with the ability to represent Aboriginal clients and lead complex criminal matters.

Responsibilities

• Lead day-to-day operations, including staff supervision, rostering, matter allocation and supporting a collaborative, high-performing team.
• Supervise, mentor and develop junior solicitors, strengthening advocacy skills, professional capability and ongoing CPD.
• Run complex criminal matters across Local, Children’s and District Courts, including EAGP matters, hearings, sentences and trial preparation.
• Build stakeholder and inter-agency relationships with Courts, DPP, Legal Aid, Community Corrections and other justice partners.
• Deliver high-quality, culturally appropriate legal advice and representation, while managing complex matters and ethical issues.
• Contribute to practice excellence and law reform, maintaining current legal knowledge and supporting policy development.
