Job summary

Legal Aid Queensland in Caboolture seeks a skilled lawyer for a temporary full-time role in criminal law, from appointment until 30 June 2027. You will prepare matters, appear for legally aided clients at bail applications, pleas, summary trials and committal hearings in the Magistrates and Children's Courts, and provide duty lawyer services.

You will work with trauma-informed practices, support colleagues, contribute to policy and service delivery improvements, and benefit from salary packaging

Qualifications

• Knowledge and experience in preparation, representation and advocacy in criminal law.
• Knowledge of practice and procedure in relevant areas of law and ethical standards.
• Clear, concise communication with stakeholders including clients using trauma-informed approaches.

Responsibilities

• Represent clients in criminal law matters, including preparing matters and instructing counsel, and appearing for legally aided clients at bail applications, pleas, summary trials and committal hearings in the Magistrates and Children's Courts.
• Provide duty lawyer services in the Magistrates and Children's courts, including for clients in custody, and appear on higher court call-overs and mentions.
• Provide legal information and advice to clients and members of the public.
• Support team members and staff with enquiries related to a specific area of law.
• Deliver outcomes through self-management and with supervision from senior practitioners.
• Contribute to policy, procedure and law reform initiatives.
• Build networks with internal and external stakeholders.
• Contribute to team planning and improvements to work practices.
