Job summary

UGL Transport seeks a Core Integration Engineer to lead design, integration, testing, and delivery of a world-first FRMCS network for rail operations. You will work across telco core, data, cybersecurity, and monitoring platforms to ensure a robust, scalable solution.

The role requires coordinating with operations, signalling, rolling stock and telecommunications teams, plus engaging with vendors and system integrators to deliver a reliable, secure network. NSW-based site work is expected.

Qualifications

• Degree in software/engineering or related field.
• Certifications in LTE/5G and ITIL are desirable.
• Experience with Telco core networks and IP networking.
• Familiarity with virtualization environments and UC technologies.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement FRMCS core for rail operations.
• Develop system architecture for FRMCS.
• Produce high and low-level design documentation.
• Develop interface specifications and integration designs including Telco hybrid 5G core, mission critical data platform, cybersecurity, monitoring, archiving.
• Configure and integrate mission critical applications and core network components.
• Develop test plans and procedures (SIT, SAT, integration, commissioning).
• Support field trials and operational readiness testing.
• Manage software upgrades, patches and platform releases.

Job Purpose

The Core Integration Engineer will be responsible for the successful design, integration, testing, commissioning and delivery of a world first 5G Future Rail Mobile Communications System (FRMCS) network into operational use.

The role will present persistent challenges and opportunities to find innovative solutions at pace. They will be part of a team working hard to generate an effective design based upon a 5G MNO derived core and contemporary mission critical applications.

The role will demand a blend of hard and soft skills to ensure successful integration of complex subsystems and prove the design can support the next generation of automated train control systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement FRMCS core for rail operations.
• Develop system architecture for FRMCS
• Produce high and low-level design documentation.
• Develop interface specifications and integration designs including:
• Telco hybrid 5G core
• Mission Critical data platform
• Cybersecurity platform
• Network monitoring systems
• Archiving
• Virtualisation and containerised architectures
• Support technology refresh and network modernisation initiatives.
• Configure and integrate mission critical applications and core network components.
• Develop test plans, SIT, SAT, integration and commissioning test procedures.
• Perform system validation and acceptance testing.
• Support field trials and operational readiness testing.
• Manage software upgrades, patches and platform release procedures
• Transition to operational readiness / develop O&M policies and procedures
• Collaborate with operations, signalling, rolling stock and telecommunications teams.
• Engage with technology vendors, system integrators and maintenance partners.

Qualifications

• Degree in Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology or related discipline.
• Relevant industry certifications desirable:
• LTE/5G Certifications
• Virtualisation (containers, Kubernetes etc)
• Project management
• ITIL Foundation
• Cybersecurity
• Experience with Telco (5G) core network technologies.
• Strong understanding of IP networking principles.
• Experience with SIP, VoIP and similar UC technologies.
• Experience with virtualisation environments
