Job description

Broadsheet Media is looking for a commissioning producer to lead its video team, grow our editorial video program and oversee branded content output. They will manage a team of in-house producers working across editorial, commercial and brand projects, as well as a roster of external studios and creatives.

The successful candidate will combine production expertise with a flair for storytelling in vertical video, understanding the kind of short-form social video that resonates with audiences on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.

They will be agile, collaborative and adept at prioritising in a newsroom environment, and will work closely with Broadsheet’s team of editorial and audience experts to deliver a pipeline of video content across key pillars of food and drink, art and design, fashion and travel. They will also work closely with the Broadsheet Studio team on client briefs, concepts and deliverables.

This is a key role within Broadsheet and an opportunity to have a significant impact at one of Australia’s most recognised, reputable and innovative digital publishers.

How to Apply

Please submit your CV and a short cover letter outlining your experience, interest in the role and why you are the ideal candidate for the position. Please also include three examples of relevant video work or campaigns that you have personally worked on in the last two years. LinkedIn will only allow one document to be uploaded so please combine your application into a single PDF before applying.

The Role

The commissioning producer brings Broadsheet editorial to life in video, while managing a team of high-performing in-house producers working across commercial, editorial and brand projects. They are responsible for identifying, developing and managing video projects from conception to completion.

They are a strong editorial thinker with excellent instincts, who thrives in fast-paced settings and brings energy, creativity and a flexible, solutions-focused approach to their work. They will respond quickly to news and cultural moments to deliver a daily pipeline of engaging, original and on-brand video that cuts through on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and beyond.

The commissioning producer will also monitor performance closely, using insights and analytics to improve and refine our content schedule.

The successful candidate will have a firm understanding of production standards and logistics, a strong network of local and interstate crew, and a positive, proactive approach to every project. This is a hands-on production role, involving ideation, commissioning and full-cycle production. You’ll be expected to shoot and edit when needed, and jump into production on commercial and brand campaigns when the business requires.

Management is a key part of this role: the commissioning producer will lead a team of in-house producers, fostering a supportive, creative, and high performing culture with clear priorities and workflows.

They will ensure our videos are timely, visually distinctive, and consistently aligned with Broadsheets’s brand. Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach are essential in this role. A large part of this role includes commissioning external production teams, overseeing the creative process and ensuring content meets Broadsheet’s editorial standards.

We’re looking for someone who relishes finding creative and innovative solutions to challenges; can maximise cost and time efficiencies and build great relationships with talent and crew.

Skills and experience

  • Minimum five years’ experience producing online video content
  • Management experience, with the ability to lead and inspire a small team
  • Strong editorial instincts and storytelling skills
  • Proven ability to commission and oversee freelance creatives and crews
  • Experience managing pre-production (scheduling; budgeting; preparing treatments; booking crew, studios and talent; preparing call sheets, shoot schedules and talent contracts); production (producing, directing) and post-production (overseeing offline, grade, design, online, sound mix, mastering, approvals, delivery, upload and archiving)
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent organisational skills and ability to manage tight deadlines and shifting priorities
  • A calm, solution-focused mindset
  • A solid understanding of video production equipment, techniques, formats and outputs
  • A genuine curiosity in Australia’s cultural landscape, people and places
  • A solid understanding of the Broadsheet’s voice, tone and visual style
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Adobe InDesign
  • Proficiency in Adobe Premiere is a plus
  • Experience in branded content is a plus
