Job summary

HDR is seeking a Mechanical Commissioning Engineer to join our Sydney team, delivering commissioning services for mission critical facilities and data centres across Australia. You'll work with experienced teams to plan, test, validate and hand over critical mechanical systems, ensuring safety, efficiency and reliability.

Qualifications

  • A degree, diploma or trade qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in commissioning, construction, facilities engineering or building services.
  • Exposure to mechanical building systems including HVAC, chilled water, hydronic, fire protection, hydraulic or critical cooling systems.
  • Experience working on site-based projects.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Support commissioning activities throughout construction, testing and handover phases.
  • Participate in Factory Witness Tests (FWTs), Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), site inspections and functional performance testing.
  • Review commissioning plans, test procedures, technical submissions and project documentation.
  • Assist with troubleshooting, issue resolution and verification of system performance.
  • Work closely with contractors, consultants, vendors, facility operators and client teams.
  • Maintain commissioning records, reporting and project documentation.
  • Support commissioning management activities including commissioning plans, test scripts and handover documentation.
  • Assist in tracking commissioning issues, project risks and system readiness throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Enter and maintain commissioning data within commissioning management software platforms.
  • Support preparation of commissioning reports for project teams and clients.
  • Attend contractor, client and commissioning meetings and contribute to documentation and reporting outcomes.
  • Contribute to quality, safety and continuous improvement initiatives across the Commissioning team.

The Role

As a Commissioning Engineer - Mechanical, you'll support the delivery of commissioning services across a diverse portfolio of projects, with a particular focus on mission critical facilities and data centres.

Working alongside experienced commissioning and technical design teams, you'll be involved in the planning, testing, validation and handover of critical mechanical systems, helping ensure they perform safely, efficiently and reliably in accordance with client requirements and design intent.

This is a permanent position based in Sydney, supporting a growing portfolio of commissioning projects . The role provides an excellent opportunity to gain exposure to some of the country's most technically complex facilities while building your career within HDR's expanding Commissioning practice.

What You’ll Be Doing
You will:

  • Coolant Distribution Units (CDUs) and direct-to-chip liquid cooling
  • Air and water testing, adjusting and balancing (TAB)
  • Smoke control and pressurisation systems
  • Fire protection and hydraulic building services systems
  • Building Management Systems (BMS) and critical environmental control systems

Ideally, You’ll Have
  • A degree, diploma or trade qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in commissioning, construction, facilities engineering or building services.
  • Exposure to mechanical building systems including HVAC, chilled water, hydronic, fire protection, hydraulic or critical cooling systems.
  • Experience working on site-based projects.
  • Exposure to factory testing, equipment inspections, commissioning activities or building systems testing.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Exposure to commissioning management processes, system testing and project delivery methodologies.
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation quality.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities within a fast-paced project environment.
  • Experience within data centres, healthcare projects or other critical environments will be highly regarded.
  • Australian Citizenship and the ability to obtain an Australian Government Security Clearance will be advantageous.
  • A willingness to travel to project sites as required.
