Consultant Psychiatrist positions available for CAMHS Psychiatrists at Cairns Hospital, Queensland

The Role

Seeking Psychiatrists for positions in Child and Youth Mental Health at Cairns Hospital and Health Service.

  • Considerable experience in the direct delivery of inpatient and outpatient mental health clinical services
  • Proven ability to manage patients with complex mental health treatment needs and/or in situations of high clinical risk
  • Proven ability to lead, and function within, a multidisciplinary mental health clinical team and work collaboratively with consultant psychiatrist colleagues to facilitate smooth clinical and operational service functioning.
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative partnerships with non-mental health medical practitioners, other government service providers (e.g. Department of Child Safety, Department of Disability Services) and non-government service providers (e.g. General Practitioners, disability support organisations)
  • Experience in provision of clinical teaching to junior medical staff, medical students and other mental health clinicians

Cairns and Hinterland Mental Health Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs Service (MHATODS) provides a range of community and inpatient services, staffed by multidisciplinary teams with a broad mix of skills, knowledge and professional backgrounds.

The services currently include a 38 bed Acute Adult Mental Health Unit; 10 bed Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit; 12 bed (sub-acute) Adult Step Up Step Down Unit, 20 bed Community Care Unit; Acute Care Team including the 1300 MH CALL Intake Service and Emergency Department MH Team; Adult Mental Health Community Care Teams; Child and Youth Mental Health Services; EVOLVE Therapeutic Services; Older Persons Psychiatry Service ; Consultation Liaison Services; Mobile Intensive Rehabilitation Team; Rural & Remote Mental Health Services; Forensic Mental Health Service; Perinatal services and Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs Services.

Key positions in the CHHHS MHATODS provide support and outreach to the Torres and Cape HHS (TCHHS). The Remote medical team report to CHHHS MHATODS and work collaboratively with TCHHS.

Requirements

Applicants should be registered (or eligible for registration) as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia and be a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) or equivalent as an overseas trained specialist who has completed their training in either the UK, Ireland, Canada, USA (ABPN certified) or New Zealand.

The Medical Board of Australia implemented a new expedited pathway to specialist registration in December 2024, eliminating the need for a specialist assessment with a specialist medical college for those with an accepted qualification in Psychiatry. The only accepted qualifications are MRCPsych and a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) after 2007. Now is the time to apply for a new role.
