Job summary

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field.
• 5+ years in industrial/commercial engineering in mission critical facilities (data centers, etc).
• 5+ years of CFD modeling experience for room- and campus-level studies.

Responsibilities

• Perform CFD models on data center designs using established methods and tools.
• Conduct internal CFD studies for data halls and electrical rooms under N and N+1 conditions.
• Run transient thermal studies to assess IT equipment survivability during power/fault events.
• Generate pressure and velocity profiles to validate mechanical performance.
• Perform external CFD studies for campus scale and plume recirculation analyses.
• Model air emissions/dispersion for generator exhaust ingress into intakes.
• Align CFD standards with global Mechanical teams; review inputs for accuracy.
• Support external CFD consultants and improve CFD workflows.

Key job responsibilities

CFD Modeling & Technical Execution

• Performing CFD models on innovative data center designs using established methodologies and approved software tools
• Executing internal CFD studies for data halls and electrical rooms, including steady-state thermal analysis under N unit failure scenarios and N+1 operational conditions at full load
• Performing transient thermal studies to assess IT equipment survivability during concurrent power failure and unit failure events, including time-to-recovery analysis post power restoration
• Generating pressure and velocity profiles to validate mechanical system performance against mechanical design requirements
• Executing external CFD studies encompassing campus mechanical and electrical plant, including adjacent industrial complexes and site obstructions, and performing thermal plume recirculation analysis to understand heat dissipating equipment impact on building and equipment intake temperatures
• Performing air emissions and contaminant dispersion modeling to quantify generator exhaust ingestion into building intakes
• Working with global Mechanical teams to achieve alignment of design and CFD modeling standards
• Supporting external CFD consultants by reviewing model inputs and assumptions for accuracy
• Contributing to process improvements within the team's CFD workflows and documentation practices
• Participating in cross-functional design reviews and providing technical input on thermal and airflow performance

About the team

The Data Center Design Engineering team at Amazon Web Services consists of Architects, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, and Controls Engineers working to design the next generation of data centers. The team is committed to achieving a world-class uptime for our customers and strives to develop a fleet of buildings emphasizing security, safety, and efficiency, while finding new ways to meet our growing demand.

We justify and communicate the technical decisions we make directly to AWS leadership and work hard to drive continuous advancements in our designs. As an integral member of the team, you will have the opportunity to directly impact our business and create positive change.

Basic Qualifications

• 5+ years of industrial or commercial engineering in mission critical facilities including but not limited to: data centers, power generation or oil and gas facilities experience
• Experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities
• Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical field
• 5+ years of experience in CFD modeling experience with both internal (room-level) and external (campus-level) CFD modeling

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional Engineer License
• Experience with building codes and regulations for your region
• Experience carrying design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment or mass production
• Proficiency with CFD software (6sigma by Future Facilities, ANSYS Fluent/CFX, Cradle SC Stream, HELYX)
