A leading educational institution is seeking enthusiastic tutors to support its School of Economics in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Candidates with a background in economics and teaching experience are encouraged to apply. Responsibilities include conducting tutorials, marking, and providing student consultations. This casual role offers flexibility across the academic year, with opportunities for professional development through orientation and training sessions.
Tutors play a critical ‘frontline’ role in the delivery of the School’s extensive teaching program.
We employ new tutors each year to undertake tutorial work in undergraduate and postgraduate economics units of study. Tutors are appointed on a casual basis for the entire academic year (Semesters 1 and 2). There is also a limited mid-year intake for Semester 2.
Students enrolled in the following University of Sydney economics courses are encouraged to apply to be a tutor* :
External candidates may also apply. The minimum eligibility requirement is a Bachelor of Economics (Honours) (or equivalent) or Master of Economics (or equivalent) with a distinction average. Some teaching experience is also essential.
Existing tutors automatically continue in Semester 2, subject to student enrolments in relevant units. However, tutors need to reapply at the end of each year to continue working in the following academic year (see key dates below).
In some circumstances (e.g., when a unit requires specialised knowledge), we may deviate from this eligibility criteria.

The form allows you to indicate your preferred units of study. In deciding your preferences, indicate the units of study which match your interest and expertise. We will try our best to allocate units matching your preferences; however, final allocation of tutorials is subject to operational requirements and enrolment numbers.

EOIs will be accepted during the following periods :
For Semester 1, 2024 : 15 October to 15 November (11 : 59pm)
For Semester 2 : 1 May to 31 May (11 : 59pm) (only for new tutors - existing tutors are not required to submit an EOl for S2).
There is some flexibility with EOI deadlines for HDR students. However, the EOI must reach us at least one month prior to the beginning of semester.
Applications will be assessed by a committee, and successful candidates will be contacted in late November for Semester 1 and mid-June for Semester 2 tutoring. Interviews for Semester 1 are expected to be held on 27 and 28 November 2023.

This induction session is organised by the Faculty and is held in the week before each semester commences (Week Zero). Attendance is important to ensure new staff are adequately equipped with the basic skills and information they require in the classroom and beyond. The session is compulsory for all new sessional tutors.
A Tutor Welcome Session is held in the week before each semester commences (Week Zero). Attendance is compulsory for all tutors, including those who have tutored with us previously. Tutors will be paid for attending this session. Topics covered include school facilities, information on discipline‑specific teaching strategies, and administrative matters such as timesheets and pay.
All appointed tutors should ensure they meet with the unit coordinator and familiarise themselves with the tutorial material and procedures for their unit prior to the commencement of classes.
At the end of the year, we come together as a School to convey our thanks to all our tutors.
The Teaching Development Program (TDP) also runs in Semester 1 (5 sessions), covering key skills in teaching design and practice (including principles of assessment, constructive alignment, teaching community). Attendance of the TDP is optional, but tutors are strongly encouraged to attend.
