Emergency Medicine Career Medical Officer, Blue Mountains Hospital

Employment Type: Temporary Full Time or Temporary Part Time (02-Feb-2026 up to 2 years)

Remuneration: $139,187 - $207,388

Hours Per Week: up to 38

The primary purpose of the Career Medical Officer Emergency Medicine is the assessment, investigation and initial management of the patients presenting to the Emergency Department of Blue Mountains Hospital, under the supervision of the Emergency Specialist on duty. Working in this position also serves to support completion of the Certificate and Diploma of Emergency Medicine through the ACEM.

What you'll be doing
  • Managing patients in the Emergency Department in an autonomous manner with minimal supervision from Specialist.
  • Coordinating with surgical, nursing and other disciplines to ensure optimal care including diagnostic tests and consultations.
  • Participating in 24/7 rotating roster of days, evenings, nights and weekends.
Where you'll be working
  • Blue Mountains District ANZAC Memorial Hospital Emergency Department treats around 18,000 patients per annum. The hospital has a 41 bed medical and surgical unit, 4 bed COU, 18 bed Rehab ward, 2 Palliative suites and a 16 bed Women’s and Children’s Health unit. The facility provides a variety of inpatient and outpatient services, in house JMO and senior doctor supervisor, after hours service ED doctor and on call specialists.
  • The area has 2 Resuscitation Rooms; Acute Care; dedicated paediatric acute care, ambulatory and fast track type patients. The Department is staffed by Emergency Physicians providing up to 2 consultants covering the department from 0800 to 2400 hours, seven days a week with GP /senior CMO cover overnight.
  • The Hospital’s close links with the community mean that services are relevant and local, with an active Hospital Auxiliary and volunteers and close ties with the Leura Gardens Festival committee, local Rotary and consumer groups, keep us on the pulse of Blue Mountains residents’ health care needs.

Essential requirements
  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
  • Demonstrated clinical practice as a registered medical practitioner in the last 2 years in a setting appropriate to the needs of the position.
  • Minimum three years postgraduate experience including 6 months minimum emergency medicine experience in an Australian Emergency Department in the last 2 years.
  • This position is subject to an appropriate supervision level which can be supported by the health agency. If the incumbent’s registration conditions include supervision requirements, the level of supervision must be able to be supported by the health agency for this role.
  • Valid Working with Children Check, cleared National Police Check.
  • To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy, this includes any amendments made from time to time.

  • Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
  • Minimum three years postgraduate experience including 6 months minimum emergency medicine experience in an Australian Emergency Department in the last 2 years.
  • Adept ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services.
  • Advanced verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development and self-education.
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
