Job summary

Deakin University is seeking a Counsellor to support student mental health and wellbeing at the Melbourne Burwood Campus. This part-time (0.8 FTE) role delivers assessments, referrals and short-term interventions, promoting mental health literacy and academic success across the university community.

You will lead initiatives to improve service delivery, maintain clinical records, and provide specialist advice to students, staff and stakeholders, contributing to an inclusive, supportive campus

Qualifications

• Postgraduate qualifications or progress towards postgraduate qualifications and extensive relevant experience.
• Registration as Psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) or membership of Australian Association of Social Work (AASW).
• Registration as Mental Health Social Worker.
• Professional approved training and experience in initial critical incident response.
• Knowledge of higher education context and the range of issues faced by a diverse student population.
• An accredited facilitator of Mental Health First Aid training (desirable).

Responsibilities

• Lead initiatives and drive continuous improvement in service delivery, processes, and practices.
• Deliver evidence-based mental health assessments, referrals, and short-term therapeutic interventions to support student wellbeing.
• Assess and manage a broad range of student mental health concerns, including acute, complex, and high-risk presentations.
• Maintain accurate and timely clinical records in compliance with legislative, University, and professional standards.
• Provide specialist mental health advice, consultation, and support to students, staff, and key stakeholders.
