As a Backend Engineer at EatClub, you build the systems behind the experience restaurants and diners see every day. You work in Java on serverless AWS, designing APIs and shipping features end-to-end with product, frontend and engineering teammates. It's a hands-on role with plenty of ownership and variety: one week you might be shaping a new feature, the next you're tracking down a performance problem.
- Designing and building scalable backend services in Java
- Developing and maintaining serverless APIs, and building and consuming REST and GraphQL APIs
- Taking features from idea to production, working alongside product and frontend teammates
- Improving the performance, reliability and scalability of our systems
- Debugging and resolving technical issues, and fixing the root cause, not just the symptom
- Writing automated tests and keeping our code easy to test and change
- Reviewing code and sharing what you know with the team
- Building new features that help restaurants fill tables and diners find great deals
- Extending our GraphQL and REST APIs as our products grow
- Tuning database queries and service performance as usage scales
- Improving how we monitor, test and ship our serverless services
- Simplifying and modernising parts of our architecture as we learn what works
- 3-5 years of commercial experience as a Java developer, with a degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline
- Strong Java backend skills and a solid grounding in software development principles
- Experience building serverless APIs
- Experience with REST and GraphQL APIs
- Strong experience with SQL and NoSQL databases (MySQL, Postgres, etc.)
- Performance tuning and debugging experience
- A habit of writing automated tests and testable code
- Familiarity with modern architectures and design patterns
- Comfort working with Git
- Strong written and verbal communication
- Full working rights in Australia
- Experience with AWS (S3, AppSync, API Gateway, Lambda, etc.)
- Experience building or working with CI/CD pipelines
- An interest in food, restaurants and dining out
- Proactive. You spot what needs doing and get on with it without waiting to be asked
- A finisher. You take a feature from first commit to production and check that it works
- Product-minded. You care about why you're building something and who it's for, not just how
- A collaborator. You work easily with product, frontend and fellow engineers, and explain your thinking clearly
- Curious. You enjoy variety, like digging into a tricky bug, and keep learning
- Restaurants and diners get fast, reliable experiences, and new features land smoothly
- Our APIs stay quick and dependable as we grow
- Issues are found and fixed quickly, and rarely come back
- Teammates ship faster because your code is clean, tested and easy to build on
- You want to work in a single narrow area rather than across the stack with variety
- You prefer detailed instructions to owning problems from start to finish
- You'd rather not work closely with product and frontend teammates
- You prefer slow-moving environments with fixed priorities over a fast-moving one
