Job summary

Hall & Wilcox in Perth invites an Associate or Senior Associate to join our General Insurance team. The role focuses on defending general liability claims in casualty, property damage and product liability, with regular appearances in WA District and Supreme Courts.

We offer a hands-on role with development opportunities, hybrid work, flexible leave and supportive colleagues. You will review documents, draft court material, mentor juniors and contribute to a collaborative, inclusive culture.

Qualifications

• minimum of 4 years of post-admission experience advising on defendant insurance matters
• experience in personal injury and general liability is preferred
• ability to manage files and progress matters through court proceedings
• strong drafting, analytical and communication skills

• Permanent, full-time or part-time position (minimum 0.6 FTE)

About the roleand team

We have an opportunity for an Associate or Senior Associate to join our General Insurance team based in our Perth office.

Our Perth General Insurance team sits within our national General Insurance section, with around 190 team members nationally. We provide general insurance advice to insurers, reinsurers and corporates, and we sit on the legal panels of three of Australia’s top four general insurers.

The primary focus of this role will be advising on the defence of general liability claims in the casualty, property damage and product liability space. Our team regularly appears in the District Court and Supreme Court of WA.

This is a fantastic hands-on role with significant development and progression opportunities as well as the opportunity to work with interesting clients, including some of Australia's top insurers.

You will be responsible for:

• reviewing documents and the preparation of evidence;
• drafting correspondence to the Court and third parties;
• conferencing with witnesses and preparing witness statements;
• preparing briefs for Counsel;
• drafting Court documents and attendance at Court;
• drafting client advices;
• drafting letters of instruction to experts; and
• supervising and mentoring junior lawyers and other members of the team.

About you

You will ideally have the following skills and experience:

• a minimum of 4 years of post-admission experience (PAE) advising on defendant insurance matters, ideally in personal injury and general liability;
• we will also consider candidates from a plaintiff background who are interested in transitioning to defendant work;
• experience in the day-to-day management of files, and in running matters through court proceedings;
• proactive and able to work autonomously and as part of a team;
• excellent technical, analytical and drafting skills with a keen attention to detail;
• excellent verbal and written communication skills; and
• the ability to organise and prioritise effectively.
