Job description

A rare opportunity to shape your employment law career across disputes, investigations and strategic advisory work on a global platform.

  • A lean team offering genuine responsibility and visibility
  • Work on sophisticated employment issues
  • Enjoy the resources of a global firm

An opportunity has arisen for an Employment lawyer at Associate or Senior Associate level to join a highly regarded international law firm in Sydney.

The role offers exposure to a broad and varied employment practice, spanning both contentious and non-contentious matters, with the opportunity to work on complex domestic and cross-border issues alongside an established global network.

The practice is continuing to develop its presence in the Australian market, offering an opportunity to join a close-knit team with strong regional and international connections and genuine scope for career progression.

The Team

The Employment practice advises a diverse client base across a broad range of industries, including major corporates, financial institutions, investors and multinational organisations.

The team works across the full spectrum of employment law, providing strategic and commercially focused advice on both contentious and advisory matters. Their work includes executive appointments and exits, workplace investigations, employment disputes, regulatory issues and transactional employment matters.

With strong connections to colleagues across the firm's regional and international offices, the team offers exposure to sophisticated matters with an international dimension.

The Opportunity

The team is looking to appoint an Associate or Senior Associate to work across a diverse portfolio of employment matters.

This is a broad role offering exposure to both contentious and non-contentious work, rather than a position focused exclusively on one area. The successful candidate will work closely with senior practitioners, take ownership of matters and have the opportunity to develop strong client relationships.

Given the lean structure of the team, the role offers variety, responsibility and the opportunity to play an active part in the continued development of the practice.

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Advising on a broad range of contentious employment matters, including employment disputes, litigation, mediation and workplace investigations.
  • Providing strategic and commercial advice on non-contentious employment issues, including contracts, policies and executive remuneration and exits.
  • Advising on employee misconduct, disciplinary matters, discrimination and regulatory investigations.
  • Supporting clients on restructures, redundancies, dismissals and other workforce-related issues.
  • Advising on the employment aspects of corporate transactions, including M&A and outsourcing arrangements.
  • Drafting and negotiating employment-related documentation.
  • Developing and maintaining strong client relationships and contributing to business development initiatives.
The successful candidate will ideally have:
  • Approximately 4-9 years' post-qualification experience, assessed on the Australian PQE scale.
  • A background in employment law, with experience across both contentious and non-contentious matters.
  • Experience gained within a well-regarded top-tier, mid-tier or national law firm.
  • Strong technical, drafting and commercial skills.
  • The ability to manage matters independently and engage confidently with clients.
  • A collaborative approach and an interest in contributing to the development of a growing practice.
  • International platform: Work within a leading global law firm with an extensive international network and opportunities to collaborate across jurisdictions.
  • Quality and variety of work: Exposure to a broad mix of complex employment advisory, disputes, investigations and transactional matters.
  • Career progression: Join a lean team where lawyers are given meaningful responsibility and the opportunity to develop their practice.
  • Close-knit environment: Work directly with senior practitioners in a collaborative team with strong regional and international connections.
